The president of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Marcio Pochmann, participated on Monday (2) in the symposium “Strategic Action of the National Health Foundation (Funasa): Methodological and Technological Innovations for Municipal Basic Sanitation Plans”. The seminar was held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in Brasília.

The seminar aims at identifying and taking hold of initiatives and experiences of municipal basic sanitation plans; analyzing advances in methodological and technological innovations; and defining strategies and guidelines to improve Funasa's policy for municipal support.

“Our participation in the seminar highlighted the substantial changes that the Brazilian economy and society have undergone in this first quarter of the 21st century, given the advance of the process of demetropolization and the displacement of the productive structure from the capitals to the interior”, analyzed the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann.

Updates to the legal framework for basic sanitation were also discussed, in terms of planning, universalization goals and the promotion of sanitation as a right.

“With a fundamental emphasis on cities with up to 50,000 residents, which represent approximately 85% of the total number of municipalities in the country and almost 1/3 of the population, the central concern is related to the development of methodological and technological innovations for municipal basic sanitation plans,” explained Mr. Pochmann.

The event was attended by IBGE and Funasa representatives and also by representatives of: the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); the Ministry of Health; the Interministerial Committee for Basic Sanitation (CISB); the Ministry of Cities; the Ministry of the Environment; the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development; the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency (ANA); the National Association of Municipal Sanitation Services (ASSEMAE); the National Front of Mayors (FNP); the Brazilian Association of Municipalities (ABM); and the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM).
