Big Data Regional Hub conducts workshop on climate change indicators

The 5th Conference on the Use of Big Data for Official Statistics was held on June 24 – 8 with the topic “ARIES (Artificial Intelligence for Environment and Sustainability) for Mitigation Indicators and Adaptation  to Climate Change”. The event was organized by the UN Big Data Regional Hub in Brazil in partnership with the UN ARIES for SEEA and the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), with support from the Statistical Conference for the Americas, (CEA) by means of the Knowledge Transmission Network (RTC). Participants from 13 countries (Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Porto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela) exchanged information about the use of artificial intelligence to monitor climate change.

The topic discussed included topics such as the development and use of climate change indicators and the presentation of case studies. The workshop had interactive sessions, group discussions and asynchronous activities. Besides the theoretical activities, participant also had practical one, during which they had the opportunity to use the learned content adapting it to real contexts in their countries.

ENCE coordinates UN Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil

The result of a partnership between the IBGE and the UN Statistics Division, the UN Big Data Regional Hub in Brazil (https://hub.ibge.gov.br) was launched in November 2021 in the 11th Statistical Conference for the Americas, carried out by the Statistical Conference for the Americas, (CEA). The Hub is based at the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), an academic area of the IBGE, which coordinates efforts and contributions from different fields of the Institute to support activities within the Regional Hub.

The project focuses on the advance in the use of big data use to improve the production of official statistics, so as to promote the sharing of knowledge and of innovative initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Other hubs besides Brazil are United Arab Emirates, Rwanda, Indonesia and China.
