Invited by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Marcio Pochmann, President of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), participated in the Global Dialogue on Technology: Shaping an Equitable Future for All on June 27-28. The event is part of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD 30).
Held in New York, United States of America, the Dialogue aimed at exploring the role of technology as a vehicle for the advance of health and sexual and reproductive rights, as well as at working as an accelerator of the sustainable development. At the same time, it aims at recognizing its benefits and potential harms. The governments of Bahamas and Luxembourg, together with UNFPA, hosted the event.
The President of the IBGE took part in two panels: "Meaningful Connectivity: Closing the Digital Divide", on June 27, which explored innovative political and technical solutions aiming at reducing connectivity gaps and digital exclusion. In the next day, he integrated the panel "Setting the Statge - Reflections and Expectations from Regional Leaders," where UNFPA regional representatives presented ideas from their respective regions on how technology has accelerated the agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
"In the event, it was possible to present the on-going project of using new technologies to reduce the time and distance existing in the surveys developed by the IBGE, such as the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED), still under construction," stated Pochmann, adding that "improving and sharing information on the national reality, showing the real face of Brazil, contribute to democratize opportunities, since data better inform the society, as well as to improve the quality and number of public policies."
For Pochmann, "the Global Dialogue on Technology marks the prominence of UNFPA in gathering excellent contributions concerning the diversities of initiatives tackling the digital divide in the world. A successful experience," continues him, "that encourages the construction of convergences required to transform the present and the future above the current reality of the planet, especially in face of the technological leap underway."
Representatives from governments, technology companies, health industries, civil society, scholars, youngsters and feminist and digital rights movements in the entire world participated in the event. Guided by principles like equity, inclusion and diversity, the Dialogue will provide a platform for a comprehensive and diversified representation of voices and perspectives, fostering a rich interchange of ideas and strategies.
The idea is to produce practical recommendations that contribute to the Future Summit, including the Global Digital Compact, that will be held in September 2024, which will mark a unique-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the global cooperation to face critical challenges, approach gaps in the global governance, reaffirm existing commitments, including those with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Letter from United Nations, as well as to better position the multilateral system to positively impact on the life of people.
