The award ceremony of the 1st 2022 Population Census Photo Award was held on October 16 at the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (ALESP). It gathered more than 50 people among IBGE officers and elected enumerators with the best pictures. Denis Gimenez, Advisor of the IBGE´s Presidency, and Francisco Barcia, IBGE´s State Superintendent in São Paulo, were present as well. The event was broadcast through the ALESP´s official channel on YouTube.
The award was divided into three categories: Urban Landscapes, Rural Landscapes and Housing. Between August 2022 and February 2023, nearly 6,400 enumerators sent pictures taken during the Census data collection. These images were taken through the lenses of the DMCs (Data Collection Mobile Devices). Of the 17,781 pictures, 164 were selected as finalists by IBGE officers, by means of a poll on the Award´s website.
In the final phase, the public had the opportunity to select the best pictures in each category in an on-site exhibition in Salvador (BA) and in a virtual exhibition in July 2023. Nine pictures, three in each category, were selected as the winners and awarded according to the regulation. Those ranked in the third positions earned R$1,000 each. Those ranked in the second and first positions earned R$3,000 and R$5,000 each, respectively.
The ceremony began at 2 PM. In the opening session, Francisco Barcia thanked the presence of the participants and congratulated the winners of the Photo Award. Denis Gimenez stated the importance and relevance of the award. “This award recognizes the leading roles of those who, indeed, played the leading roles in the data collection: the enumerators.”
Then the winners of the award were announced. In the Urban Landscapes category, the winners were Bruno Cerveira, from São Paulo (third position), Isabelle Souto, from Rio de Janeiro (second position) and Matheus Carvalho, from Pará (first position). In the Rural Landscapes category, the winners were Yuri Miranda, from Minas Gerais (third position), Lucimara Arrigoni, from Paraná (second position) and Francielly Ribeiro, from Bahia (first position). In the Housing category, Aline Romaniv, from Santa Catarina (third position), Jaqueline Vieira, from Piauí (second position) and Micaele Santos, from Sergipe (first position) were awarded.
Living in Tobias Barreto (SE), Micaele Santos, the winner in the Housing category, was an enumerator from August to November 2022. “I was afraid in the beginning, because I was concerned in interviewing people. As I was well accepted, it all changed and people hosted me very well. The biggest challenge was to cover three rural enumeration areas, as it is not easy to cover large rural areas under the sun of the Northeast (laughs). In one of these hikes, I saw a pink tree shining under the sunset; I thought it was a beautiful scene and I took the picture. I had 919 votes, I am very happy.”
Ranked in the second position in the Urban Landscapes category, Isabelle Souto, a Praça Seca resident in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, worked in the Census from August 2022 to February 2023. “I enumerated my neighborhood and Vila Valqueire as well. I was loving to work in the data collection, up to the moment that I was sent to Barra da Tijuca. Then I was robbed, expelled by building administrators, nobody hosted me. Even so, the experience was wonderful; knowing people was what I liked the most, especially in my neighborhood. The awarded picture came from one of these hikes: I had already seen that Beetle, which was in front of a corral with roosters. I tried to capture them, but they hid from me (laughs). Forgetting the roosters, I took a picture of the Beetle. It was abandoned. Thank you all who organized this event, especially those who had the idea, because art and culture are not valued. These initiatives help to instill some art in the people´s heads.
For Francielly Ribeiro, from Canavieiras (BA), ranked in the first position in the Rural Landscapes category, knowing people´s reality and the lush landscapes of her municipality were the best experiences during the Census. “I took boats, visited farms, it was incredible! It is fantastic to become friends and get to know unknown people during the enumeration. In a data collection in the rural area, I saw a beautiful and wonderful stack of cacao. Two minutes later, the mule “Baianinha” came to unload the cacao. Then I thought - I cannot lose this opportunity! I asked the farm´s owner and took the picture of the mule unloading the cacao; I could not imagine that my picture would rank in the first position in this category among 17,781 pictures. I am very happy for this.”
