The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) coordinated this Monday and Tuesday, February 17 and 18, the seventeenth meeting of the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of the BRICS countries. As part of Brazil's pro-tempore presidency of BRICS, with the IBGE coordinating the work to be carried out by the NSOs, the meeting, held virtually, aimed at preparing the 2025 edition of the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) for the seventeenth BRICS Summit of Heads of State, to be held in Brazil on July 6 and 7, 2025.
This first meeting addressed technical aspects of the Joint Statistical Publication. Created in 2010, and with 14 editions to date, the JSP has an opening chapter presenting general information with comparable statistics for the member states, and fourteen thematic chapters, each with a summary table covering all countries, followed by specific tables for each country. The JSP also presents a set of appendices providing an overview of the BRICS statistical systems, as well as a set of annexes on the current status of the monitoring framework for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The IBGE also coordinates the production of the JSP Snapshot, a summarized version, without annexes, of the main tables of the fifteen chapters: General Information, Comparison of Economic and Social Indicators of the BRICS Countries; Population; Economically-Active Population; National Accounts; Price Indices; Standard of Living of People; Resources and Environment; Industry; Energy; Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Fishing; Transportation; Information Society; Finance; Foreign Economic Relations; Tourism.
“We discussed the scope of the two publications for 2025, the inputs needed for them, presented the graphic design proposals prepared by the IBGE, which is responsible for the publication, and assessed the schedule of activities for the countries to receive information and make data available to the IBGE, which will analyzed and compile them for the final publication. On the second day, we had a more in-depth discussion about the indicators that will make up the two publications, the extended and the summarized one,” explained Vladimir Gonçalves Miranda, deputy director of the IBGE Directorate of Surveys.
Representatives from the NSOs of South Africa, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran and Russia, as well as of Brazil, participated in the meeting.
