Inflation up by 0.39% in November, driven by food products

Inflation in the country recorded an increase of 0.39% in November, with a drop of 0.17 percentage points (p.p.) against the previous month (0.56%). The result was influenced by rises in Food and beverages (1.55%), after an increase in the price of beef (8.02%), in Transportation (0.89%), driven by the rise of airfares (22.65%), and in Personal expenses (1.43%), influenced by the rise of cigarette (14.91%). In the year, the cumulative inflation is 4.29% and, in the last 12 months, 4.87%. These results come from the Extended National Consumer price Index (IPCA), released today (10) by the IBGE.

In terms of impact on the general index of November, Food and beverages represented 0.33 p.p, and, among the subitems, striploin, rump steak, meals, soybean oil and ribs accounted for this increase, with an impact of 0.03 p.p each.

“The rise of food products was mainly infuenced by meat, which rose more tna 8% in November. The lowest offer of animals for slaughter and the higher volume of exports reduced the supply of the product,” said the manager of IPCA and INPC, André Almeida.

The group Transportation increased by 0.89%, mainly due to the subitem airfare, which rose by 22.65% and represented 0.13 p.p., the main individua impact on the monthly index. Fuels fell by -0.15%, due to drops in prices of ethanol (-0.19%) and gasoline (-0.16%). In turn, vehicle gas, (0.09%) and diesel (0.03%) recorded positive changes.

Also in Transportation, the subitem urban bus rose 3.64%, after free fares granted on the days of municipal elections in several areas of coverage of he survey in the month of October. In São Paulo, drops of -0.43% were observed in the train and in the subway, resulting from the free fares granted to the entire population on the day of ENEM (university entrance) tests.

André Almeida mentions the influence of airfares. “The proximity of the end of the year and the other holidays in the month may have contributed to this increase,” explained the manager of the survey. 

In Personal expenses (1.43% and 0.14 p.p.), the reult was mainly influenced by cigarette (14.91% and 0.07 p.p.). In November, there was an increase of the specifi Excise – IPI incident on gigarettes. Increase was also observed in the subitems toursim package (4.12%) and accomodation (2.20%).

On the other hand, the biggest drop in November came from Housing, with a rate of -1.53% and -0.24 p.p of impact on the monthly index. The result was affected by the subitem residential electricity, which dropped 6.27% in November, with the charge of the yellow tariff flag from November 1st on, adding R$ 1.885 to each 100 kWh consumed.

In addition to that, there were the following adjustments: 4.97% in Goiânia (-2.13%), since October 22; a drop of 2.98% in Brasília (-9.30%), since October 22; and a drop of 2.88% in one of the concessionaires of São Paulo (-7.23%), since October 23.

Inflation is positive in all the localities surveyed  

By area, all the localities surveyed recorded ositive drops in October. The biggest change was observed in Rio Branco (0.92%), influenced by the rise of beef (8.04%). On the other hand, the smallest change was observed in Porto Alegre (0.03%), as a result of the drop of residential electricity (-7.67%).

INPC increases by 0.,33% in November

The Extended National Consumer Price Index - INPC increased by 0.33% in November, 0.28 p.p. below the result observed in October (0,61%). In the year, the cumulative INPC was 4.27% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.84%, above the 4.60% observed in the 12 immediately previous month. In November 2023, the rate was 0.10%.

Food products rose for the third consecutive month, with a change from 1.11% in October to 1.62% in November. Non-food products, on the other hand, dropped 0.08%, after an increase of 0.45% in October.

As for regional indexes, Rio Branco recorded the biggest change (0.89%), due to the rise of of beef (8.61%) and gasoline (2.20%). The lowest change was found in Porto Alegre (-0.02%), because of the drops of residential electricity (-7.61%) and of gasoline (-1.64%).
