Cities as classrooms

Due either to the real estate speculation or to the urban design of the public administration, the pressure of the urban sprawl affects some schools, particularly in terms of the practice of sports, which requires a wide and specific area. This issue takes managers and teachers to look for options adapted to the urban reality.

According to the IBGE´s National Household Sample Survey - PNAD, 123 million persons aged 15 years and over did not practice any sport in Brazil in 2015, 38.2% of them alleging lack of time and 35% stating that they either do not like it or want it. When asking youngsters aged between 15 and 17 years, the percentage of those alleging either not liking it or not wanting it increased to 57.3%. The lack of interest may be attributed to not practicing any sport at school as children or teenagers. "Physical education is treated as any other discipline, not taking into account its particularities: it is impossible to practice it without proper facilities, changing rooms, extra time to take bath and change clothes", assesses Antônio Soares, coordinator of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ´s Research Laboratory on Body Education.

The cover story of the fourth edition of Retratos Magazine talks about two state schools in Rio de Janeiro that face challenges to foster the practice of sports among their students and how their managers and physical education teachers deal with this issue. See the complete story here.
