Civil construction prices record drop in seven states

In October, the National Index of Civil Construction (SINAPI) recorded one of the lowest rates of the year (-0.16%), registering decrease in seven states, with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

Still in October, the share of materials presented a lower change (0.20%) than the one seen in September (0.45%), especially in Maranhão, Ceará, Sergipe, Espírito Santo and Rio Grande do Sul. "There was no highlight in terms of segments in the civil construction", explains Augusto Oliveira, IBGE researcher.

In the States of Goiás and Roraima there was a significant change due to salary increases. However, the changes did not have an impact on the national index because those states have a lower weight on the calculation. Another factor, according to Augusto, is that, in October this year, collective bargaining was carried out by fewer states than in October 2016.

The national cost of construction per square meter, however, increased, going from R$1,057.99, in September, to R$1,059.68 in October. The following graph shows the values by regions:
