In June, industry grows in eight of the 15 areas surveyed

In June 2024, national industrial production increased by 4.1% from May, in the seasonally adjusted series, and eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates.
The main increases were found in Rio Grande do Sul (34.9%) and Pará (9.7%). The Northeast Region (-6.0%), Bahia (-5.4%) and Pernambuco (-5.2%) accounted for the main drops.
The quarterly moving average was positive in eight of the 15 areas surveyed, among which the increases in Paraná (4.5%), Pará (3.2%), São Paulo (1.2%) and Mato Grosso (0.9%) stand out. On the otehr hand, Goiás (-1.7%), Espírito Santo (-1.6%) and Amazonas (-1.4%) recorded the main drops in June 2024.
Against the same month a year ago, industry grew by 3.2%, with positive results in 11 of the 16 areas surveyed. Maranhão accounted for the biggest increase (17.3%).
As for the cumulative index in 2024, national industry increased by 2.6%, with positive results in 16 of the 18 areas surveyed. Rio Grande do Norte (22.9%) registered the main increase.

Eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive increases in June, in the seasonally adjusted series, following the advance (4.1%) of national industrial production. Rio Grande do Sul (34.9%) and Pará (9.7%) accounted for the main increases, observed again after a drop of 26.3% in the previous month due to the impact of rainfall which affected the local production sector, and the second cumulative gain of 25.2% in two consecutive months of production increase.
Paraná (3.5%), Minas Gerais (3.3%), Espírito Santo (2.7%), Ceará (1.6%), São Paulo (1.3%) and Santa Catarina (0.9%) completed the group of areas with positive indexes in June 2024. Rio de Janeiro, with null change (0.0%), repeated the same level as in the previous month.
On the other hand, the Northeast Region (-6.0%), Bahia (-5.4%) and Pernambuco (-5.2%) recorded the main drops in the month, with decreases in the first two after respective increases of 4.7% and 9.0% in May, and the last one having its second drop in production, a period marked by a cumulative loss of 8.7%. Goiás (-4.6%), Amazonas (-3.4%) and Mato Grosso (-2.1%) accounted for the other negative results in June 2024.
The quarterly moving average index for national industry advanced 0.7% in the quarter ended June from the same a year ago and eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates, among which those of Paraná (4.5%), Pará (3.2%), São Paulo (1.2%) and Mato Grosso (0.9%) stand out.
On the other hand, Goiás (-1.7%), Espírito Santo (-1.6%) and Amazonas (-1.4%) accounted for the main drops in June 2024.
Against June 2023, industry grew by 3.2% in June 2024, with positive results in 11 of the 18 areas surveyed. It is worth mentinong tha June 2024 had one business day less (20) than the same month a year ago (21).
Maranhão (17.3%), Rio Grande do Norte (15.2%), Mato Grosso do Sul (14.1%), Ceará (11.1%) and Pará (10,5%) recorded the biggest increases in the month, due, to a great extent, to the activities of pulp, paper and paper products and basic metals (aluminium oxide), in the first area; coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel), (ethyl alcohol), food products (fresh or cooled beef, residue of soybean oil extraction and VHP sugar) and pulp, paper and paper products, in the third; leather artifacts, tarvel articles and footwear (sporting leather and children shoes made of artificial leather), textiles, manufacture of wearing apparel and footwear (panties, bras and shaper bras), metal products (metals lids or capsules, pre-fabricated metal constructions and aluminium cans for packaging) and basic metals, in the fourth; and mining and quarrying industry (iron, copper, aluminium and manganese ore), in the last one.
São Paulo (8.6%) and Paraná (7.4%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (3.2%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (2.6%), Santa Catarina (2.0%), Minas Gerais (1.5%) and Bahia (0.5%) completed the group of areas with increase in production in the monthly index of June 2024.
On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-9.6%) and Amazonas (-5.7%) accounted for the main increases this month, mainly due to the activities of mining and quarrying industry (iron ore pellets or and crude oil), in the former; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, automotive gasoline, aviation kerosene and naphthas), beverages (syrup preparations for industrial purposes) and computer, electronic and optical equipment (bank ATMS), in the latter.
Mato Grosso (-3.1%), Pernambuco (-2.8%), Goiás (-1.7%), Northeast Region (-1.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.5%) also recorded negative results in the production of the monthly index in June 2024.
As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, industry grew by 2.6%, with positive results in 16 of the 18 areas surveyed. Rio Grande do Norte (22.9%) recorded a two-digit increase, the highest for the cumulative index in the first six months of the year, driven, to a great extent, by the activity of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel and automotive gasoline).
Goiás (7.6%), Ceará (7.3%), Santa Catarina (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (5.2%), Maranhão (4.8%), São Paulo (4.4%), Mato Grosso (4.0%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (3.4%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (2.6%), whereas Bahia (2.4%), Pernambuco (2.1%), Amazonas (2.0%), Espírito Santo (1.3%), Paraná (1.3%), Minas Gerais (1.2%) and Pará (0.8%) complete the group of areas with cumulative production increase in the year.
On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) recorded the main cumulative decrease in the index for January-June 2024, mainly due to the activities of machinery and equipment (harvesting machines, tractors, backhoes, seeders), food products (rice, powdered milk, bread, fresh or cooled poultry meat and giblets, wheat powder, sterilized/UHT/long life milk, condensed milk and sausages and other pork-based preparations), chemicals (non-saturated ethylene of NPK fertilizers, polipropilene and non-saturated propene) and motor vehicles, trailers and trunks (cars, trailers and semi-trailers and car pieces).
The Northeast Region, with a negative change of 0.4%, completed the group of areas with cumulative negative rates in the year.
In the comparison between Q1 and Q2 2024, both comparisons against the same periods in the previous year, eight of the 18 areas surveyed accelerated, following the trend of the overall production, with a change from 1.9% to 3.3%.
Maranhão (from -0.3% to 10.7%), Paraná (from -2.5% to 5.0%), São Paulo (from 2.1% para 6.5%), Pernambuco (from -0,1% to 4.3%) and Santa Catarina (from 3.6% to 7.6%) accounted for the main increases, whereas Espírito Santo (from 5.5% to -2.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 2.7% to -4.3%), Goiás (from 10,8% to 5.1%), Mato Grosso (from 6.6% to 1.9%) and Amazonas (from 4.3% to -0.2%) recorded the main decreases between the two periods.
The cumulative index in 12 months, having increased by 1.5% in June 2024, kept its positive result and accelerated from the result of May 2024 (1.3%).
In reginal terms, 15 of the 18 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in June 2024, but ten with increased dynamism from the indexes of last May. mo. Maranhão (from -1.8% to 0.8%), Ceará (from -0.7% to 1.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from -1.1% to 0.4%), São Paulo (from 0.5% to 1,5%) and Paraná (from 2,6% to 3.5%) registered the main increases between May and June 2024, whereas Espírito Santo (from 13.4% to 11.5%), Mato Grosso (from 8.1% to 6.4%), Amazonas (from -0.5% to -1.5%), Goiás (from 10.1% to 9.3%) e Rio de Janeiro (from 6.8% to 6.0%) recorded the main drops in the period.
