Quarterly Livestock Surveys - first results: slaughter of cattle, hogs and pigs and chicken grows in Q1 2023

The first results of animal production in the 1st quarter of 2023 indicate that, compared to the same period of 2022, the slaughter of chickens grew by 4.8%, that of cattle increased by 4.7%, and that of hogs and pigs increased by 3.5 %. Compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, chicken slaughter increased by 2.2%, cattle slaughter fell by 2.4% and that of hogs and pigs grew by 1.8%
The purchase of milk amounts to 5.85 billion liters, 1.5% less than in the 1st quarter of 2022 and 7.0% less than in the previous quarter. The acquisition of leather pieces by tanneries grew 6.4% compared to the 1st quarter of 2021 and decreased by 0.4% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022, totaling 7.59 million whole pieces of rawhide. In the 1st quarter of this year, 1.02 billion dozen chicken eggs were produced, up 2.8% year-on-year and down 1.9% in the quarter.

Cattle slaughter up 4.7% in the year and down 2.4% compared to the previous quarter
In the 1st quarter of 2023, 7.32 million cattle head were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service. This amount represented an increase of 4.7% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 2.4% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022.
Cattle carcasses add up to 1.90 million metric tons in the 1st quarter of 2023, an increase of 3.0% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, but a decrease of 6.5% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 3.5% in the annual comparison and 1.8% in the quarter
The slaughter of hogs and pigs totaled 14.14 million head in the 1st quarter of 2023, representing an increase of 3.5% compared to the same quarter of 2022 and an increase of 1.8% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 1.29 million metric tons in the 1st quarter of 2023, up 3.5% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and an increase of 1.3% compared to the previous quarter.
Chicken slaughter grows 4.8% in the annual comparison and 2.2% in the quarter
In the 1st quarter of 2023, 1.60 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This result meant an increase of 4.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and an increase of 2.2% compared to the 4th quarter of 2022.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 3.43 million metric tons in the 1st quarter of 2023. This total meant an increase of 6.4% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022 and an increase of 3.1% compared to the previous quarter.
Milk acquisition drops 1.5% in the annual comparison and 7.0% in the quarter
In the 1st quarter of 2023, the acquisition of raw milk made by establishments that operate under some type of sanitary inspection was 5.85 billion liters. There was a reduction of 1.5% compared to the volume registered in the 1st quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 7.0% compared to that obtained in the previous quarter.
Leather acquisition is 6.4% above the 1st quarter of 2022
The tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Leather Survey – those tanning at least five thousand whole rawhide units per year – declared having received 7.59 million whole rawhide pieces in the 1st quarter of 2023. This amount represents an increase of 6.4% compared to that recorded in the 1st quarter of 2022 and a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs rises 2.8% in the year and drops 1.9% compared to the previous quarter
The production of hen eggs was 1.02 billion dozen in the 1st quarter of 2023. The result represented an increase of 2.8% compared to the same period of the previous year and a reduction of 1.9% compared to the 4th quarter in 2022.
