Volume of services increases by 2.4% in November

In November 2021, the volume of services in Brazil increased 2.4% from October, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the sector is 4.5% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and at the same level as in December 2015.

In the series without seasonal adjustment, against November 2020, volume of services advanced 10.0%, ninth positive rate in a row. In the cumulative index in the year, volume of services increased 10.9% against the same period a year ago, and the cumulative index in 12 months (9.5%) reached the most significant rate in the series that started in December 2012.

The increase of 2.4% in volume of services from October to November 2021 included four of the five activities surveyed, with a highlight to information and communication services (5.4%). The other advances came from transportation (1.8%), services rendered to families (2.8%) and other services (2.9%). On the other hand, the only negative rate in the month was that of professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.3%), fourth negative rate in a row, with a cumulative decrease of 3.7%.

The quarterly moving average was leveled off (0.0%) in the quarter ended the same month a year ago. Among the sectors, there was also balance between positive (2) and negative (2) rates. Among the activities that recorded increase: services rendered to families (2.1%) and information and communication (0.8%). Other services (-3.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%) recorded decreases. Transportation was leveled off (0.0%).

Against November 2020, the volume of services increased 10.0%, ninth positive rate in a row. The month’s result was marked by increases in four of the five dissemination activities and in 69.3 of the 166 types of services investigated.

The sectors of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (13.3%) and information and communication (11.4%) accounted for the main positive contribincreased revenue of companies in the sectors of road transportation of cargo; air transportation of passengers; mass road transport; mailing; management of ports and terminals; maritime and port support navigation; and maritime agency, in the former sector and portals, Internet providers and other information services on the Internet; software development and licensing; consulting in information technology; other telecommunication activities; data treatment, application service providers and hosting services; development of computer programs on deman; and broadcast TV activities, in the latter.

Other increases were those of services rendered to families (21.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (4.6%), with increments in the revenue of: hotels; restaurants; and catering services, in the former sector; and in engineering services; car rental; charging and cadastral information activities; management of non-financial intangible assets; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; and travel agencies, in the latter.

The only negative rate was that of other services (-4.5%), mainly due to the lower revenue of companies of post-harvesting activities; recovery of plastic material; and administration of organized exchanges and of OTC markets.

Considering the cumulative index in the year, the services sector increased by 10.9%, with positive rates in five activities and in almost three fourths (72.9%) of the 166 types of services surveyed. Among the sectors, the most important positive contributions came from transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (15.1%) and information and communication (9.4%). The other advances were those of professional, administrative and complementary services (7.2%); services rendered to families (17.8%) and other services (5.9%).

Services grew in 18 of 27 Federation Units in November

In regional terms, most (18) of the 27 Federation Units recorded increase in volume of services in November 2021, compared with the previous month, following the increase (2.4%) registered in Brazil. Among the places with positive rates, the most important impacts came from São Paulo (4.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.6%), Santa Catarina (3.7%) and Paraná (2.1%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso do Sul (-4.0%) recorded the main increase in regional terms.

Against November 2020, the advance of services in Brazil (10.0%) was registered in 24 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (11.9%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.1%), Minas Gerais (7.7%), Paraná (10.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.7%) and Federal District (15.9%). The only negative results in the month were those of Bahia (-0.3%), Piauí (-0.3%) and Acre (-0.5%).

In the cumulative index in the year, (10.9%), all the 27 Federation Units recorded increases. The main positive impact was that of São Paulo (11.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (7.8%), Minas Gerais (14.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.0%) and Santa Catarina (14.9%).

Tourism activities increased 4.2% in November

In November 2021, the index of tourism activities increased by 4.2% from October, seventh positive rate in a row, a period marked by a gain of 57.5%. The tourism segment is still 16.2% below the level of February 2020. By area, eight of the 12 localities surveyed recorded increase. The most relevant contribution came from São Paulo (8.0%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (2.8%), Paraná (6.3%) and Minas Gerais (2.3%). On the other hand, pernambuco (-1.1%) and Bahia (-0.4%) recorded the main negative results in the month.

In the comparison November 2021/November 2020, the volume of torurism activities in Brazil increased 25.5%, eighth positive rate in a row, mainly due, probably, to the increase of revenue of companies in the segments of hotels; air transportation; restaurants; mass road transport; car rental, catering services and travel agencies. All the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered increases, with a highlight to São Paulo (19.9%), Minas Gerais (48.3%), Rio de Janeiro (19.1%), Bahia (44.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (44.4%).

Considering the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities recorded an increase of 21.1% against the same period last year, mainly due to increases in the revenue of air transportation; hotels. restaurants; car rental and mass road transportation. All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (9.4%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (16.8%), Bahia (49.3%), Minas Gerais (29.6%) and Pernambuco (42.7%).
