In October, industry grows in eight of the 15 areas surveyed

Eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded increases in industrial output, from September to October, in the seasonally-adjusted series. Four results were above the national average (1.1%), in decreasing order: Paraná (3.4%). Pernambuco (2.9%), Santa Catarina (2.8%) and Northeast Region (1.7%).

Other four increases came from Mato Grosso (1.1%), Ceará (0.5%), São Paulo (0.5%) and Minas Gerais (0.4%).

Rio Grande do Sul (0.0%) remained unchanged after recording the same rate as in September.

Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%), Goiás (-3.2%), Espírito Santo (-1.8%), Pará (-1.8%), Amazonas (-1.1%) and Bahia (-0.1%) recorded decreases.

Positive rates in eight of the 15 areas surveyed reflect the expansion of resumed production after interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Paraná (3.4%), Pernambuco (2.9%) and Santa Catarina (2.8%) registered the biggest increases, with the first one recording its sixth positive rate in a row and an increase of 51.5% in the period; the second, increasing again after successive decreases in August (-3.0%) and September (-1.1%); and the third one with a hike of 52.4% in the period May-October 2020.

Northeast Region (1.7%) also advanced above the national average (1.1%), and, together with Mato Grosso (1.1%), Ceará (0.5%), São Paulo (0.5%) and Minas Gerais (0.4%) completed the group of areas recording positive figures this month.

Rio Grande do Sul (0.0%) had the same rate as in September. Among the areas with falling results, Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%) and Goiás (-3.2%) had the most significant drops in October 2020, both with drops in output for the second consecutive month and cumulative losses of 7.8% and 3.3%, respectively. Espírito Santo (-1.8%), Pará (-1.8%), Amazonas (-1.1%) and Bahia (-0.1%) accounted for three main negative results in the month.

The quarterly moving average increased 2.4% in the quarter ended October 2020 against the previous month. That indicator was positive in ten of the 15 areas surveyed, the main ones being Paraná (5.1%), Santa Catarina (4.6%), São Paulo (3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.4%), Amazonas (2.8%), Ceará (2.3%), Bahia (1.9%) and Northeast Region (1.8%). Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%) and Goiás (-1.0%) recorded the main decreases.

Against the same month a year ago, industrial production increased 0.3% in October 2020, with positive results in nine of the 15 areas surveyed. It is worth mentioning that October 2020 (21 days) had two business days less than October 2019 (23).

Santa Catarina (7.6%), Pernambuco (7.2%) and Ceará (6.1%) accounted for the main advances. Amazonas (5.2%), Pará (4.9%), Paraná (4.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.6%), São Paulo (2.1%) and Minas Gerais (1.4%) are also in the group of areas with output increase.

Mato Grosso (-11.7%) and Goiás (-9.6%) recorded the most significant decreases and Espírito Santo (-7.6%), Bahia (-6.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.6%) and Northeast Region (0.2%) also had negative rates.

In terms of cumulative index in the year, against 2019, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded decreases, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (-17.0%), Ceará (-9.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-9.0%) and Amazonas (-8.9%). São Paulo (-8.2%), Santa Catarina (-7.8%) and Bahia (-6.9%) registered negative rates below the national average (-6,3%), whereas Paraná (-6.0%), Minas Gerais (-5.8%), Northeast Region (-5.0%) and Mato Grosso (-4.6%) completed the group of areas with decrease of output in this index.

On the other hand, Pernambuco (2.4%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Goiás (0.7%) and Pará (0.1%) completed the group of areas with increase of output in terms of cumulative indexes in the year.

The cumulative index in 12 months fell 5.6% in October 2020 and had slight increase in intensity of decrease from the previous month (-5.5%), when it interrupted the downward trend observed since March 2020 (-1.0%).

Twelve of the fifteen areas recorded negative rates, but in eight of them decreases were less significant than in September 2020. Espírito Santo (from -19.4% to -18.3%), Santa Catarina (from -7.6% to -6.8%), Pará (from -0.8% to -0.1%), Ceará (from –8.2% to -7.6%), Pernambuco (from 1.1% to 1.7%) and Minas Gerais (from -7.1% to -6.7%) recorded increases between September and October 2020.

Goiás (from 3.1% to 1.0%), Mato Grosso (from -3.2% to -4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (from 3.6% to 2.6%) and Bahia (from -5.7% to -6.2%) accounted for the main decreases between the two periods.
