Retail sales change -0.3% in August

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales of the retail trade retreated 0.3% compared with July. It had been 0.6% in the previous month. The quarterly moving average changed -0.2% in the quarter ended in August.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade rose 5.1% in relation to August 2023, the 15th consecutive rate on the positive side. The cumulative index in the year hit 5.1%, whereas the cumulative index over the last 12 months stayed at 4.0%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction material and wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, volume of sales fell 0.8% in the seasonally-adjusted series. The quarterly moving average changed -0.1%. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the extended retail grew 3.1%, accumulating a rise of 4.5% in the year against the same period in 2023 and of 3.7% in 12 months.

Seven out of eight activities retreat in the comparison with July

After growing 0.6¨% in July, the Brazilian retail trade dropped 0.3% in August in comparison with the previous month. In sectoral terms, negative figure prevailed, with seven out of eight activities showing a retraction: Other articles of personal and domestic use (-3.9%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-2.6%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-2.0%), Furniture and domestic appliances (-1.6%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-0.4%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.2%) and Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.1%). Only Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries grew 1.3% between July and August 2024.

In the scope of the extended retail trade, the activity of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell 5.2%, whereas the sector of Construction material changed 0.3%.

Five retail activities advance against August 2023

In relation to August 2023, five out of eight sectors investigated stayed on the positive side: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (15.7%), Furniture and domestic appliances (6.4%), Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (6.1%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (5.8%) and Other articles of personal and domestic use (1.6%).

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-7.6%), Fuels and lubricants (-4.6%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-2.8%) stayed on the negative side.

In the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material rose:8.3% and 4.5%, respectively. On the other hand, Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco dropped 11.5% in august 2024 compared with August 2023.

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries remained rising in August 2024 over August 2023 (15.7%). Altogether, it has been growing for 18 months (the last month it dropped was February 2023: -0.5%). In the overall composition of the inter-annual rate, this sector was the second biggest influence, adding up to 1.5 p.p. of the total of 5.1% of the retail (Table 1). In terms of the cumulative index in the year, the increase up to August was of 14.5%. In the last 12 months, it accelerated the growth pace, from 11.2% up to July to 12.0% up to August.

The sector of Furniture and domestic appliances grew 6.4% in sales over August 2023, the fifth consecutive rise (the last month it dropped was March 2024: -4.4%). Having changed from 3.4% up to July to 3.7% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to August showed an increase in the growth pace. The cumulative index over the last 12 months stepped up its growth: from 2.5% up to July to 3.1% up to August.

The activity of Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco increased 6.1% in sales over August 2023, reaching four consecutive months of growth in the inter-annual indicator. The positive value of August took this activity to exert the biggest influence among eight activities, adding up to 3.4 p.p. to the total of 5.1% of growth in the month against same month last year comparison. In the year, July and August remained at the same level of gains: 5.6% up to July and 5.7% up to August. The same happened with the cumulative index over the last 12 months: 5.4% both up to July and up to August 2024.

The segment of Fabric, apparel and footwear rose 5.8% in August 2024 compared with the same month in 2023. For this indicator, the year of 2024 registered consecutive non-negative changes, from May (2.0%) to August. As a result, this sector accumulated gains for the second month in a row: 0.6% up to July and 1.6% up to August. It also gained in the last 12 months, after 20 months recording losses: +0.9% up to August.

Closing the growing sectors, the group of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which includes department, optical, jewel, sporting goods, toy stores, etc., rose 1.6% in sales against August 2023, completing seven consecutive months of positive figures (the last month it dropped was January 2024: -2.1%). Up to August 2024, this sector accumulated gains of 7.3% in relation to the same period in 2023. The result was positive in 12 months as well: 0.9% against the 12 previous months.

The group of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery fell 7.6% in sales against August 2023, the fourth drop in a row. In the last 19 months, the only positive figure was in April 2024 (2.4%). The cumulative index in the year up to August was negative at 7.3%, the second consecutive month to register the same value. In the last 12 months, losses of 7.9% were recorded up to August.

The group of Fuels and lubricants fell 4.6% in sales against August 2023, the fourth consecutive negative figure (-4.0% in May and June and -4.4% in July). This activity was the only one to negatively contribute to the total inter-annual indicator, with -0.6 p.p. out of +5.1%, according to Table 1. In the year, this sector accumulated losses of 2.% up to August, an acceleration in relation to the previous months (-1.4% up to May, -1.9% up to June and -2.2% up to July). The series of cumulative figures in the last 12 months was also of losses, though maintaining the same level: -3.2% up to June, -3.3% up to July and -3.4% up to August.

Concerning Office, computer and communication equipment and material, the inter-annual comparison fell 2.8% in August 2024, the first negative figure after growing for two months (5.2% in June and 0.3% in July). Compared with the same period of 2023, the cumulative index in the year decelerated the pace of gains in August, changing from 2.7% up to July to 2.0% up to the reference month. The scenario was the same in the last 12 months: 3.4% up to July changing to 2.7% up to August, reducing the pace of gains.

In the extended retail, volume of sales of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces grew once again in August 2024 compared with 2023 (8.3%), completing 16 consecutive months of rises. This sector exerted the second biggest influence on the overall composition of the rate, adding up to 1.6 p.p. to the total of 3.1% in the extended retail. Along 2023 and 2024, this sector accumulated gains in every month, reaching 12.7% up to August 2024. In terms of the cumulative figure over the last 12 months, the pace of gains was above 12.0% for the second month in a row: 12.4% up to July and 12.1% up to August.

The inter-annual result for Construction material was positive at 4.5% against August 2023, the third positive figure in a row (1.3% in May, 3.9% in June and 11.0% in August). In terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months, the pace of gains remained the same in the last two months (3.4% up to July and 3.5% up to August). It stepped up the pace of growth in the last 12 months: 0.9% up to June, 1.9% up to July and 2.3% up to August.

Lastly, the activity of Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco dropped in the inter-annual indicator, after rising 0.6% in July. In August, this sector exerted the major influence, on the negative side, among all the 11 sectors of the extended retail, contributing with -1.8 p.p. out of the total of 3.1%. As a result, the cumulative index in the year lost 6.4% up to August, the sixth consecutive month with negative values. The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months lost as well: -2.6% up to August.

Retail trade grows 4.8% in the fourth bimester of 2024

The retail trade rose 4.8% in the fourth bimester of 2024, compared with the same bimester in 2023, being the 12th consecutive bimester showing non-negative figures. The positive result was followed by five out of eight sectors that composes the global indicator: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries (15.9%), Furniture and domestic appliances (7.3%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (6,1%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (5.7%) and Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (4.7%). On the other hand, three activities reported negative changes in relation to the fourth bimester of the previous year: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-6.3%), Fuels and lubricants (-4.5%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-1.2%).

The result was also positive for the extended retail (5.2% in the fourth bimester of 2024 in relation to the same bimester of 2023), followed by Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (14.1%) and Construction material (7.6%). The sector of Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco dropped 5.7% in the fourth bimester.

Compared with July, sales fall in 17 Federation Units in August

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the national average rate of retail sales changed -0.3% between July and August 2024, with a predominance of negative figures in 17 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Minas Gerais (-2.4%), Tocantins (-2.0%) and Rondônia (-1.8%). In contrast, six out of 17 Federation Units pressed positively, highlighted by Roraima (2.2%), Ceará (2.1%) and Bahia (1.3%).

In the extended retail trade, the change between July and August 2024 was of -0.8%, also with a predominance of negative figures in 16 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Mato Grosso do Sul (-4.5%), Minas Gerais (-2.9%) and Acre (-2.5%). Nine out of 27 Federation Units pressed positively, highlighted by Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%), Rio Grande do Norte (1.3%) and Roraima (1.3%). Amapá and the Federal District remained stable (0.0%) between July and August.

Sales rise in 25 Federation Units in relation to 2023

Compared with August 2023, change in sales of the retail trade this month registered a predominance of positive figures in 25 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Amapá (23.1%), Paraíba (19.9%) and Tocantins (15.2%). Espírito Santo was the only state to record a negative figure (-2.2%), whereas Minas Gerais remained stable (0.0%) in relation to August 2023.

In the extended retail trade, the change between August 2024 and August 2023 was of 3.1%, with positive figures in 23 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Amapá (22.1%), Paraíba (16.6%) and the Federal District (10.4%). In contrast, four Federation Units reported negative rates, highlighted by: Mato Grosso do Sul (-8.9%), Minas Gerais (-0.4%) and Maranhão (-0.4%).
