IPCA increases 0.21% in June

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of June increased 0.21%, being 0.25 percentage points (p.p.) below the May rate (0.46%). Cumulative IPCA in the year has reached 2.48%. The rate for the last 12 months is 4.23%, above the 3.93% observed in the previous 12 months. In June 2023, the change had been of -0.08%.

Seven of the nine groups of products and services surveyed recorded increases in June. The main impact came from Food and beverages (0.44%), with 0.10 p.p. Health and personal care , recorded the biggest change, with an increase of 0.54%, accounting for 0.07 percentage points. Transportation on the other hand, dropped by 0.19%, after an increase of 0.44% in May. The other groups stood between -0.08% in Communicationand 0.29% in Personal expenses.

In Food and beverages (0.44%), food at home decelerated from 0.66% in May to 0.47% in June. Prices of potato (14.49%), long life milk (7.43%), ground coffee (3.03%) and rice (2.25%) rose. As for drops, carrot (-9.47%), onion (-7,49%) and fruits (-2,62%) stand out.

Food away from home (0.37%) changed less against the previous monthly result (0.50%). The subitems snacks and meals decelerated: from 0.78% to 0.39%, and from 0.36% to 0.34%, respectively.

The result of Health and personal care (0.54%) was influenced by perfumes, which rose 1.69%. The increase of health insurance (0.37%) results from the adjustment (6.91%) authorized by the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANS) on June 4, which went into effect for the period May 2024 - April 2025. Therefore, the IPCA of June included monthly shares from May and June.

As for Housing (0.25%), the rate for water and sewage rate (1.13%) comes after adjustments of 9.85% in Brasília (9.19%), in effect since June 1st; of 6.94% in São Paulo (2.05%), since May 10; and of 2.95% in Curitiba (1.61%), since May 17. As for the subitem piped gas (-0.49%), the result of Rio de Janeiro (-1.61%) comes from the average drop of 1.75%, observed since June 1.

Also in Housing, the rise of residential electricity (0.30% and 0.01 p.p.) was influenced by the adjustment of 6.76% in the fares of Belo Horizonte (5.98%), on May 28.

Transportation (-0.19%), recorded drops in airfares (-9.88% and -0.06 p.p.). As for fuels (0.54%), prices of diesel (-0.64%) and vehicle gas (-0.61%) fell, whereas those of gasoline (0.64%) and ethanol (0.34%) rose.

By metropolitan area Goiânia (0.50%) recorded the biggest change, influenced by the rises of ethanol (5.19%) and gasoline (2.86%). On the Other hand, Porto Alegre (-0.14%) recorded the smallest change, due to drops in airfares (-9.62%) and gas bottles (-5.02%).

In order to estimate the monthly index, the prices collected from May 30 to June 28, 2024(reference) were compared with those in force from May 1 to May 29, 2024 (base). The indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source. And encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.

INPC up by 0.25% in June

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC rose 0.25% in June, below the level of a month ago (0.46%). The cumulative INPC in the year is 2.86%. I the last 12 months, the cumulative index has reached 3.70%, above the 3.34% of the immediately previous 12 months. In June 2023 the rate had been -0.10%.

Food products decelerated from 0.64% in May to 0.44% in June. Non-food products also decelerated, and stood at 0.19% in June, below the 0.40% registered a month ago.

As for regional indexes, Belo Horizonte and Brasília recorded the biggest change (0.58%), due to the rise in residential electricity (5.98%), in the former, and in water and sewage rate (9.20%), in the latter. The lowest change was that of Porto Alegre (-0.16%), driven by bottled gas (-5.02%).

The INPC has been calculated by the IBGE since 1979. It refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 5 minimum wages, with a salaried head of the household and encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.
