Industrial output drops in 10 of 15 places surveyed in June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, ten out of the 15 places surveyed registered negative rates between May and June 2019, following the retreat of the national industry (-0.6%). The steepest drops were recorded in Rio de Janeiro (-5.9%), Pernambuco (-3.9%) and Bahia (-3.4%).

On the other hand, Pará (4.9%) posted the highest growth in June and the second consecutive positive rate, thus accruing an expansion of 68.0% in the period. In the seasonally-adjusted series, ten out of the 15 places surveyed registered negative rates between May and June 2019, following the retreat of the national industry (-0.6%). The steepest drops were recorded in Rio de Janeiro (-5.9%), Pernambuco (-3.9%) and Bahia (-3.4%). Rio de Janeiro offset part of the growth of 8.3% registered in May 2019; Pernambuco recorded the second consecutive negative rate and accrued a loss of 4.8%; and Bahia interrupted two consecutive months of increasing production, a period in which it accrued and advance of 8.5%.

Paraná (-2.3%), São Paulo (-2.2%), Santa Catarina (-1.2%), the Northeast Region (-1.2%), Ceará (-0.9%) and Minas Gerais (-0.9%) also posted more intense drops than the national average (-0.6%), whereas Mato Grosso (-0.6%) completed the set of places that registered negative indexes in June 2019.

On the other hand, Pará (4.9%) posted the highest growth in June and the second consecutive positive rate, thus accruing an expansion of 68.0% in the period. These results interrupted three consecutive months of drop in this type of comparison, a period in which it accrued a reduction of 38.6%. The other positive rates were recorded by Rio Grande do Sul (2.0%), Amazonas (1.8%), Espírito Santo (1.0%) and Goiás (0.1%).

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the moving average index for the  overall industry declined 0.1% in the quarter ending in June 2019 over the previous month, and maintained the predominantly downward trend started in August 2018. In regional terms, seven out of the 15 places surveyed posted negative rates, highlighted by the sharpest declines reported by Espírito Santo (-2.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%), Minas Gerais
(-1.1%) and Goiás (-0.7%). Conversely, Pará (6.0%), Bahia (1.5%), the Northeast Region (1.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.1%) registered the highest advances.

Comparing with June 2018 in the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retreat of 5.9% of the national industry was followed by 11 out of 15 places surveyed. It is worth mentioning that June 2019 (19 days) had less two business days than June 2018 (21).

Mato Grosso (-13.6%), Espírito Santo (-13.2%) and Minas Gerais (-12.0%) registered the most intense declines. The Northeast Region (-8.6%), Bahia (-8.5%), Pernambuco (-7.0%) and São Paulo (-6.1%) also recorded steeper negative rates than the national average (-5.9%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (-5.3%), Paraná (-3.3%), Goiás (-2.2%) and Santa Catarina (-1.8%) were the other places where the production retreated.

On the other hand, Amazonas (5.4%) posted the most intense advance in June 2019. Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%), Pará (2.7%) and Ceará (0.7%) also reported positive rates.

Having retreated 1.0% in the second quarter of 2019, the industry remained on the negative side since the last quarter of 2018 (-1.2%) and the first quarter of 2019 (-2.3%), all of them compared with the same period a year ago. The reduction in the pace of loss between the first and second quarter of 2019 was explained by the gain of pace registered by nine out of the 15 places surveyed, highlighted by Amazonas (from -5.0% to 4,2%), Ceará (from 0.4% to 5.9%), Pernambuco (from -2.4% to 2.8%), Bahia (from -3.4% to 0.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 6.1% to 9.8%), Santa Catarina (from 2.9% to 6.4%) and São Paulo (from -2.7% to 0.7%).

On the other hand, Espírito Santo (from -7.6% to -16.3%), Pará (from -0.7% to -8.0%) and Minas Gerais (from -2.5% to -8.4%) recorded the steepest declines between the two periods.

In the cumulative index in the year against the same period in 2018, the reduction reported in the national output reached nine out of the 15 places surveyed, highlighted by Espírito Santo (-12.0%) and Minas Gerais (-5.6%). Mato Grosso (-4.7%), Pará (-4.5%), the Northeast Region (-2.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.1%) also posted higher negative rates than the average industry (-1.6%), whereas Bahia (-1.4%), São Paulo (-0.8%) and Amazonas (-0.7%) were the other places that declined the production.

Conversely, Rio Grande do Sul (8.0%) and Paraná (7.8%) registered the highest advances in the cumulative index in the year. Santa Catarina (4.7%), Ceará (3.1%), Goiás (2.1%) and Pernambuco (0.1%) also recorded positive rates.

Having retreated 0.8% in June 2019, the cumulative rate over the last 12 months pointed out to a loss of pace against the result of the previous month (0.0%) and maintained the predominantly downward path started in July 2018 (3.3%). In regional terms, nine out of the 15 places surveyed posted negative rates in June 2019 and 11 registered lower dynamism against the indexes of last May. Bahia (from 1.4% to -0.1%), Pernambuco (from 3.9% to 2.6%), the Northeast Region (from 0.3% to -0.9%), Paraná (from 6.3% to 5.1%), Mato Grosso (from -0.9% to -2.0%), Minas Gerais (from -2.1% to -3.1%), Pará (from 4.4% to 3.5%) and São Paulo (from -0.9% to -1.7%) recorded the major losses between May and June 2019, whereas Ceará (from 1.5% to 1.9%), Amazonas (from -2.8% to -2.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 9.2% to 9.4%) and Goiás (from -2.5% to -2.4%) posted the gains between the two periods.
