Industrial employment changed by 0.4% in August

Industrial employment increased by 0.4% in August 2011 over the figure in the immediately previous quarter (seasonally adjusted series), after having recorded negative change of 0.1% in June and July. Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the quarterly moving average index had positive change of 0.1% in the quarters ending in July and August and remained stable as observed since September last year. Compared to August 2010, the number of salaried employed persons decreased by 0.6%, the nineteenth consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. The index accumulated in the first eight months of the year rose 1.6%, but with a slightly lower rhythm than in the last few months. The annualized rate, measured by the index accumulated in the last twelve months, after rising 2.3% in August 2011, has decelerated since last February (3.9%). In relation to August last year, industrial employment grew by 0.6%, with increase of the number of workers in nine of the 14 areas surveyed. The main positive contributions to the overall result came from Paraná (6.7%), North and Central West Region (3.0%), Pernambuco (7.6%), Minas Gerais (1.6%) and Northeast Region (1.2%). The main negative influence came from São Paulo (-1.6%).

 

By subsector, also in terms of the monthly index, industrial employment grew in 10 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, being the main highlights food products and beverages (4.4%), means of transportation (6.5%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.1%), other products from manufacturing industry (3.5%) and machinery and equipment (2.2%). Paper and printing (-8.4%), footwear and leather articles (-7.5%), wood (-10.7%) and apparel (-2.9%) accounted for the main negative impacts.

 

In terms of the index accumulated in the first eight months of 2011, the level of persons employed in industry was 1.6% bigger than in the same period of the previous year, supported by the increase in 11 of the 14 areas and in 10 of the 18 subsectors surveyed. Among the areas, Paraná (5.3%), Minas Gerais (2.9%), North and Central West Region  (3.3%), Northeast Region (2.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.6%) accounted for the major positive influences on industry; São Paulo (-0.3%), Ceará (-1.3%) and Espírito Santo (-0.4%) recorded the negative rates in the index accumulated in the year. By subsector, the most relevant positive contributions came from means of transportation (7.5%), food products and beverages (2.8%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.2%), machinery and equipment (4.3%), metal products (4.5%), other products from manufacturing industry (5.0%) and metallurgy (6.3%). On the other hand, paper and printing (-9.0%), apparel (-3.4%), Wood (-8.5%) and leather footwear  (-3.3%)  accounted for the main negative impacts.  

 

Number of hours paid is 0.4% bigger than in July

 

 

In August 2011, the number of hours paid in the industrial sector increased by 0.4% over that of the immediately previous month (seasonally adjusted series) after recording positive change of 0.1% in July and decrease of 0.6% in June. Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index was stable in the quarters that ended in July and August 90.0%), after three consecutive negative rates, in a period with accumulated decrease of 0.6%.

 

In the comparisons with similar periods of 2010, the results remained positive: change of 0.1% in August 2011 and expansion of 1.3% in terms of the indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year. The annualized rate, the index accumulated in the last twelve months, remained on a downward trends as started in February 2011 (4.5%), after having changed from 2.7% in July to 2.2% in August.

 

Compared to the same month in the previous year, the number of hours paid was positive in 10 of the 14 areas surveyed, and the main influences over the overall rate came from Paraná (3.3%) and the North and Central West Region (3.0%). The main negative impact was observed in São Paulo (-2.1%).

 

By subsector, also over August 2010, there was increase of the number of hours paid in eight of the 18 subsectors surveyed, with food products and beverages (2.7%) as the main positive highlight over the average, followed by means of transportation (5.8%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus(4.1%). Among the 10 subsectors that recorded negative rates, footwear and leather (-8.6%), paper and printing (-8.6%), wood (-11.3%), apparel (-2.7%) and textiles (-3.2%) represented the main negative highlights over industry as a whole.

 

Considering the index accumulated in the first eight months of the year (1.3%), there was increase of the number of hours paid in 10 subsectors and 12 areas. Among the subsectors, the main positive contributions to the overall result came from means of transportation (7.0%), food products and beverages (2.3%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (6.9%), machinery and equipment (4.8%), metal products (3.8%) and other products from manufacturing industry (5.1%), whereas paper and printing (-9.7%), apparel (-3.6%), footwear and leather (-4.6%) and wood (-8.6%) recorded the most relevant negative impacts. By area, the North and Central West Region (4.1%) accounted for the main contribution to the overall index of industry, being followed by Minas Gerais (3.0%), Paraná (3.3%), Northeast Region (1.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-0.6%) and Ceará (-3.0%) recorded negative results in terms of the number of hours paid in the index accumulated in the eight months of the year.

 

Real payroll changed by 3.3% in August

 

In August 2011, the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers increased by 3.3% over that of the immediately previous month, the fourth consecutive positive rate in this type of comparison, with an accumulated increase of 4.3% in this period. It is worth mentioning that the result of this month was particularly influenced by mining and quarrying industry (56.7%), mainly due to the sharing of profits and results in a prominent company of the sector, once manufacturing industry recorded moderate expansion (0.7%). The quarterly moving average index (seasonally adjusted) increased by 1.3% in the quarters ending in July and August and has remained on a downward trend since December 2010.

 

In the comparison with similar periods in the previous year, real payroll grew by 7.1% in August 2011 and by 5.2% in the period January-August this year (accumulated figure). The annualized rate, the index accumulated in the last twelve months, remained on a downward trend as started last May (7.6%), and changed from 6.3% in July to 6.2% in August.

 

 

In the monthly index of August 2011, real payroll recorded expansion of 7.1%, with positive results in the 14 areas surveyed. The main contributions over the total figure of industry were observed in Rio de Janeiro (25.6%), Northeast Region (15.7%), Minas Gerais (11.1%), North and Central West Region (14.1%), São Paulo (1.9%) and Paraná (10.2%).

 

By subsector, still compared to the same month in the previous year, real payroll increased in 12 of the 18 subsectors surveyed, being the main highlights mining and quarrying industry (62.8%), means of transportation (8.6%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (42.3%), food products and beverages (4.7%), machinery and equipment (6.3%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus(7.1%) and metallurgy (6.2%). On the other hand, the most significant negative impacts over the total of industry were those of paper and printing (-7.6%), footwear and leather (-5.0%), chemical products (-1.6%)  and wood (-6.8%).

 

In terms of the index accumulated in eight months of the year, real payroll increased by 5.2%, with positive rates in all the areas surveyed. The most significant relative contribution to the national figure were those of São Paulo (3.3%) and Minas Gerais (11.2%). It is also worth mentioning the positive results from Paraná (9.0%), Northeast Region (5.8%), North and Central West Region (6.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.7%). 

 

By subsector, also considering the index accumulated in the year, real payroll recorded expansion in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, mainly due to the positive rates obtained from means of transportation (11.7%), machinery and equipment (9.0%), food products and beverages (5.4%), communication and electrical-electronic machinery and apparatus (8.1%), metallurgy (7.6%) and mining and quarrying industry (6.6%). The main negative contribution to the national result was that of paper and printing (-9.1%).
