Industrial employment changed -0.1% in January

In January 2011, industrial employment repeated the slight negative variation of 0.1% observed in the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having displayed a positive variation of 0.1% in October and November 2010. This stability reflected the dynamic industrial production observed since the second quarter of last year. In comparison with the same month of the previous year, industrial employment remained positive for the 12th consecutive month, with a generalized profile of expansion, but with reduced growth pace, as the result of January 2011 (2.7%) not only showed pace reduction against the last quarter of last year (3.6%), but also was the least favorable since March 2010 (2.4%). The annualized rate, indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, increased 3.7%, the best result since the beginning of the time series.

 


 

In the confrontation January 2011/January 2010, the contingent of workers increased in the 14 investigated areas and in 12 of the 18 sectors. The highlights were São Paulo (2.0%), Minas Gerais (4.2%), regions North and Central West (4.4%), and the Northeast region (2.1%). In the industry of São Paulo, the most significant positive influences were given by means of transportation (7.6%), machines and equipment (5.7%) and textiles (10.6%). In Minas Gerais, means of transportation (11.4%); metal products (12.8%); rubber and plastic (17.7%) and mining and quarrying industries (9.4%) were the most expressive sectors. In the North and Central West regions, the main contributions came from metal products (36.9%), electronic and communication machines and appliances (23.4%) and non-metallic minerals (9.7%), whereas in the industrial sector of the Northeast, the impacts from non-metallic minerals (13.3%), footwear and leather articles (3.3%), rubber and plastic (12.5%) and apparel (4.0%) were the most relevant.

In the analysis by sector, in comparison with the same month of the previous year, there was expansion in 12 of the 18 investigated branches. The main positive impacts came from means of transportation (8.2%), metal products (8.9%), machinery and equipment (7.4%), electronic and communication machines and appliances (7.6%) and basic metallurgy (9.0%), whereas paper and printing (-8.1%) and apparel (-2.8%) exerted the main negative impacts.

The reduced growth pace of industrial employment between the fourth quarter of last year (3.6%) and the first month of this year (2.7%) was repeated in 16 of the 18 branches, with highlights being footwear and leather articles, which changed from 2.9% in the last quarter of 2010 to -0.4% in January 2011; rubber and plastic (from 8.5% to 5.5%); machinery and equipment (from 9.6% to 7.4%); other products of manufacturing industry (from 6.6% to 4.9%); and paper and printing (from -6.9% to -8.1%). Among the places, 12 of the 14 investigated areas showed, in January 2011, a pace below that registered in the last quarter of last year, with highlights being Pernambuco (from 5.3% to 0.2%), Bahia (from 6.6% to 3.9%), Espírito Santo (from 5.5% to 3.1%), Rio de Janeiro (from 6.3% to 3.9%) and the Northeast region (from 4.2% to 2.1%). Inversely, two places showed growth in the total personnel employed in industry: regions North and Central West (from 3.7% to 4.4%) and Minas Gerais (from 4.0% to 4.2%). 

Number of hours paid was 0.1% lower than that of December 2010

The number of hours paid to industry workers, in January 2011, had a negative variation of 0.1% compared to the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having recorded increases of 0.3% in November and December.

In comparison with January 2010, there was a 2.8% increase, the lowest growth since February 2010 (1.7%). The annualized rate, when changing from 4.1% in December 2010 to 4.3% in January 2011, kept the upward trend initiated in November 2009, being the greatest expansion since the beginning of the time series.

The number of hours paid obtained positive rates in 13 of the 14 places and in 11 of the 18 surveyed branches in comparison with the same month of the previous year In the analysis by sector, the main positive contributions came from means of transportation (8.9%), metal products (10.3%), machinery and equipment (7.0%), non metallic minerals (8.1%) and electronic and communication machines and appliances (7.7%). Inversely, paper and printing (-9.1%), apparel (-2.3%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (-5.3%) exerted the main negative pressures on the total of industry.

Still in the monthly indicator, the major positive impacts came from São Paulo (1.9%), Minas Gerais (5.0%), regions North and Central West (5.8%), Paraná (3.5%) and Santa Catarina (3.0%). In the first, 11 segments increased the number of hours paid, with the highlights being means of transportation (10.3%), textiles (13.0%) and machinery and equipment (6.2%). In the industry of Minas Gerais, metal products (13.4%) and means of transportation (8.0%) exerted the main positive influences, whereas in regions North and Central West, metal products (43.8%) and electronic and communication machines and appliances (28.1%) were the most relevant positive influences. In the industries of Paraná and Santa Catarina, the highlights were food products and beverages (7.4%) and means of transportation (11.5%), in the first place; and apparel (6.2%) and machinery and equipment (9.8%), in the second. Ceará (-1.4%) had the only negative rate, pressed by the reduced number of hours paid in the sector of footwear and leather (-9.4%).

The less dynamic movement observed between January 2011 (2.8%) and the last quarter of the previous year (3.7%) is also present in 14 industrial branches, with highlights being machinery and equipment, which changed from 11.9% in the last three months of last year to 7.0% in January 2011; footwear and leather (from 1.9% to -1.5%) and food and beverages (from 0.5% to -0.4%). Among places, 12 of the 14 areas were less dynamic between the last quarter of last year and January 2011, with highlights being Pernambuco (from 5.8% to 0.3%), Ceará (from 1.8% to -1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (from 5.5% to 3.0%) and the Northeast region (from 3.5% to 1.1%).

Value of real payroll increased 5.1% in January 2011

In January 2011, the value of the seasonally adjusted real payroll of industry workers increased 5.1% in relation to the immediately previous month, after having accumulated a decrease of 4.4% in the last two months of 2010.

In comparison to the same month of the previous year, the number of hours paid increased 7.16%, the 13th consecutive positive rate in this kind of comparison. The annualized rate increased 0.4 percentage point, when it changed from 6.9% in December to 7.3% in January, keeping the upward trend initiated in December 2009 (-2.4%). January presented the highest result since May 2005 (7.5%).

In the monthly indicator, the value of the real payroll increased 7.1%, with positive results in the 14 surveyed places. The main influence was observed in São Paulo (6.1%), due to the increased value of payroll in means of transportation (11.9%), machinery and equipment (12.0%) and chemical products (14.9%). Other relevant contributions came from Minas Gerais (18.3%), stimulated by the sectors means of transportation (55.0%), machinery and equipment (26.3%) and basic metallurgy (9.8%); Rio de Janeiro (7.1%), because of means of transportation (30.0%), mining industries (12.0%) and basic metallurgy (21.7%); and Paraná (7.4%), due to the gains from means of transportation (24.4%), electronic and communication machinery and appliances (27.0%) and chemical products (16.4%).

By sector, still in the monthly indicator, the value of the real payroll increased in 14 of the 18 industrial sectors, with highlights being means of transportation (17.5%), machinery and equipment (12.2%), chemical products (11.9%), metal products (11.1%) and food and beverages (3.7%). On the other hand, paper and printing (-10.9%) and wood (-2.6%) exerted the main negative impacts on the total of industry.

The value of real payroll decreased the growth pace between the fourth quarter of 2010 (7.9%) and January 2011 (7.1%), both comparisons against the same period of the previous year. This movement was observed in 14 of the 18 sectors and in 10 of the 14 investigated places. Among the sectors, the highlights are mining industries, which changed from an expansion of 18.4% in the fourth quarter of 2010 to 5.1% in January 2011; paper and printing (from -1.2% to -10.9%) and electronic and communication machinery and appliances (from 12.5% to 7.0%). Among the places, regions North and Central West (from 10.0% to 3.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 11.1% to 5.4%) and Bahia (from 6.9 % to 1.6%) showed the greatest losses of pace between both periods.
