January 09, 2009 09h00 AM | Last Updated: March 28, 2018 05h31 PM

In relation to the previous month, in the series seasonally adjusted, the industrial production had a generalized decrease. Espírito Santo (-17.2%) Minas Gerais (-13.4%) Rio Grande do Sul (-7.2%) and Amazonas (-7.8%) recorded decreases more significant than the national average (-5.2%).  In relation to November 2007, there were decreases in 12 among 14 areas surveyed.  In this comparison, Paraná (5.7%) and Pará (4.0%) were the only areas which recorded increase.

In November 2008, the indexes seasonally adjusted by areas of industrial production decreased compared to October in the fourteen areas surveyed. Stood out the two-digit decrease in Espírito Santo (-17.2%) and in Minas Gerais (-13.4%) while Rio Grande do Sul (-7.2%) and Amazonas (-7.8%) were the other areas with decreases more pronounced than the national average (-5.2%).  The other areas recorded rates ranging from –0.2%, in Pernambuco, to –4.7% in Santa Catarina.  São Paulo (-3.2%), the most diversified industrial structure and with major participation in the national industry recorded a milder decrease than the national average.  A generalized profile of decrease as the one recorded in this month did not occur since November 1991, when the eleven areas surveyed had negative rates.

In relation to November 2007 a generalized scenario of negative rates was also recorded, once twelve among fourteen areas recorded decrease.  This trend showed the intensification and the expansion of the rhythm of decrease of the industrial activity.  In this comparison the most pronounced decreases were registered in Espírito Santo (-22.0%), Minas Gerais (-13.8%), Santa Catarina (-10.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-10.1%).  On the other hand, the only areas with growth compared to November 2007 were Paraná (5.7%) and Pará (4.0%).

The indexes by areas showed that the deceleration in the productive rhythm, recorded in the national results from the third quarter of 2008 (6.7%) to the month of November (-6.2%), showed the strong reversal in the world economic scenario since mid-September and its direct influence on credit.  The deceleration between these two periods could be verified in all areas, with most pronounced losses in Espírito Santo (from 12.4% to –22.0%), Minas Gerais (from 6.7% to –13.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 7.5% to –10.1%) and Amazonas (from 6.1% to –8.1%).

In the index accumulated in the year, the rates were positive in all the areas surveyed, but all areas decelerated the rhythm of growth compared to September and October.  Above the national average (4.7%) were Paraná (9.9%), Espírito Santo (9.3%), Goiás (9.0%), São Paulo (7.0%), Pará (6.9%), Pernambuco (5.4%) and Amazonas (4.9%).  In these areas were determining in the industrial performance along the year the major dynamism of typically exporting products, especially commodities (iron ores, sugar, cellulose, and steel products) and the considerable participation of the automotive industry and of machines and equipment producing sectors.

In November 2008, the industry of Amazonas fell for the second time: -7.8% in relation to the immediately previous month, in the series with seasonal adjustment, accumulating loss of -12.3%.

In relation to the same month of the previous year, the decrease (-8.1%) was the highest since the result of -11.7% recorded in February 2007.  As a consequence, the indexes accumulated decelerated: the index accumulated in the year changed from 6.4% in October to 4.9% in November and the index of the last twelve months, from 7.1% to 5.6%.

The decrease (-8.1%) in relation to November 2007 in Amazonas was a consequence of the decreases in eight among eleven sectors surveyed, especially electronic material and communication equipment (-15.9%), other transportation equipment (-19.5%) and machines and equipment (-19.4%), mainly due to collective vacations in companies of these sectors.  In these segments stood out respectively, the decreases in the manufacturing of mobile telephones, TV sets; motorcycles; and air-conditioning equipment.

On the other hand, the main positive result was recorded by food products and beverages (17.4%), with a major production of syrup manufacturing. In the index accumulated in the year (4.9%), the growth of the industry of Amazonas was a consequence of the positive performance of six segments.  The sectors of other transportation equipment (15.7%), edition and printing (27.8%) and electronic material and communication equipment (5.1%) led the positive contributions, influenced, respectively, by the items: motorcycles; DVDs and mobile telephones.  Metal products (-14.5%) and machines and equipment (-11.4%) brought the main negative results, influenced by the items shaving equipment; and air conditioning equipment.

In November, the industry of Pará, in the index seasonally adjusted, decreased by 3.2% in relation to October, after increasing by 2.9% in the previous month.

In relation to the same month of 2007, there was increase of 4.0%, the lowest result since last June (7.3%). Continued positive the index accumulated in the year (6.9%) and the index of the last twelve months (6.8%).

In the industry of Pará, the increase of 4.0% in relation to November 2007 was supported in the expansion of four among six segments surveyed.  The highlights were basic metallurgy (16.4%) and mining and quarrying (2.0%) which, however, had a strong reduction compared to the results of the last months.  The most significant decrease came from wood (-25.9%) as a consequence of the reduction of sawed wood and plywood.

The index accumulated in the year (6.9%) maintained a rhythm almost stable since August (7.0%), supported in the hikes of mining and quarrying (9.0%) and of the manufacturing industry (5.0%). In the first sector, major impact on the overall rate, the increase was supported by the major extraction of iron ores.  In the manufacturing industry, where four out of five segments showed expansion in the production, stood out basic metallurgy (10.0%), followed by non-metallic minerals (18.2%) and cellulose and paper (14.3%).

In November, the industrial production of the Northeast, in the series seasonally adjusted, decreased by 0.4% in relation to the immediately previous month, after decreasing (-3.8%) in October.

The decrease of 4.1% compared to November 2007 showed, mainly, the negative rates in six among eleven sectors surveyed, with the main results coming from chemical products (-15.1%); footwear and leather articles (-17.2%); electric material and equipment (-26.6%) and apparel (-6.0%). In these segments stood out, respectively, the items adobes or fertilizers and polyethylene; plastic and leather footwear; electrodes, coal brushes and transformers; cotton thread and bath clothes.  The food products sector (1.8%), with strong participation in the local industry, prevented a more negative overall result.

The increase in the index accumulated in the year (2.5%) occurred as a consequence of positive results in seven segments.  The most relevant contributions came from cellulose and paper (27.1%), food products and beverages (4.6%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (3.4%), influenced mainly by the items: cellulose; peanuts; and alcohol.  The most significant negative result came from chemical products (-2.2%), influenced by the item polyethylene.

In November 2008, the industrial production of Ceará seasonally adjusted recorded decrease of 3.4% in relation to the immediately previous month, after expansion of 1.2% in October.
