Employment in industry changed by 0.2% in August

It was the second positive result in comparison with the index of the immediately previous month, considering a seasonally adjusted series. There was accumulated increase of 0.7% in this period. In the same type of comparison, the number of hours paid and real payroll also had positive rates.

In this same type of comparison, the number of hours paid and real payroll also had positive rates: 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively. Results remained positive in comparison with the same month in the previous year: increase of employment by 2.2%, consisting in the thirteenth consecutive expansion; increase of the number of hours paid by 1.9%, and of real payroll, by 4.7%.

 


In August, industrial employment had positive change of 0.2% in comparison with the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having increased by 0.5% in July and accumulated gain of 0.7% in this period. Considering the quarterly moving average indicator, which has been on an upward trend since February, there was also change of 0.2% between the quarters which ended in August and July.

 

In relation to the same month in the previous year, there was increase by 2.2%, ending a sequence of fourteen positive rates in this comparison. This rate has been the highest one since April 2005 (3.2%). As a consequence, the indicator accumulated in the year was 1.6% and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months had acceleration of the productive rhythm from July (1.0%) to August (1.2%). 

 

Still in the comparison August 07/August 06 (2.2%), the number of workers increased in twelve of the eighteen subsectors and in nine of the fourteen areas surveyed. By subsector, the main positive impacts on the national average came from food products and beverages (4.2%), means of transportation (9.6%) and machinery and equipment (8.8%). By area, São Paulo (4.1%) accounted for the main contribution to the overall country result, with positive results in twelve industrial subsectors; among them, machinery and equipment (9.9%) was the main positive highlight. To a lower extent,  Paraná (4.2%) and Minas Gerais (2.6%) also exerted some positive influence, and, in both cases, the highlight was automobile industry, in which the increments to employment were 29.7% and 16.0%, respectively. On the other hand, Pernambuco (-4.1%) had the main negative pressure among the areas surveyed, whereas, in terms of country results by subsector, footwear and leather articles (-9.6%), wood (-7.7%) and apparel (-2.6%) were the subsectors which faced the main negative contributions to the formation of the overall rate.  

 

In the indicator accumulated in the year (1.6%), there was increase of the number of employed persons in thirteen areas and in twelve subsectors compared to the same period in the previous year. São Paulo (2.6%), Northeast Region (1.7%) and Paraná (2.4%) accounted for the main positive contributions, whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-0.9%) had the only negative rate.  In the analysis by industrial subsectors, the main positive influences to the national result came from food products and beverages (4.4%), means of transportation (5.8%) and metal products (6.3%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-6.5%), apparel (-4.8%) and wood (-5.9%) were the negative highlights. 

 

In summary, comparisons show the positive evolution of the indicator of the persons employed in industry, following the performance observed in the rhythm of industrial activity, which is a consequence, mainly, of the increased dynamism of the sectors which produce capita goods, commodities and the car industry.

 

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

 

In August, the number of hours paid to industry workers had positive change of 0.2% in comparison with July, in the seasonally adjusted series, after having accumulated increase of 0.7% in the last two months. Still considering the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index remained, for the second consecutive month, with negative change of 0.2%.  

 

The comparison with the same month in the previous year showed, for the second consecutive month, increase of 1.9%. As a result, the indicator accumulated in the first eight months of the year was 1.3%. The annualized rate, that is, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, increased by 1.1%. 

 

In the comparison August 07/August 06, there was increase of 1.9%, with increase of the number of hours paid in eight of the fourteen areas and in twelve of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. In terms of subsector, the main increases of the overall results came from means of transportation (11.3%), food products and beverages 93.3%) and metal products (8.8%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-12.9%) and wood (-7.0%) had the most significant negative contributions.

 

Still considering the monthly indicator, the areas which had the main positive impacts to the national result were São Paulo (3.5%), Paraná (4.7%) and Minas Gerais (2.1%). In São Paulo, eight of the eleven activities surveyed showed increase of the number of hours paid, especially means of transportation (10.8%), machinery and equipment (9.4%) and food products and beverages (4.3%). In the industry of Paraná, the highlights were means of transportation (34.2%) and food products and beverages (4.9%); in Minas Gerais, the most significant contribution came from means of transportation (14.8%). 

 

The indicator accumulated in the period January-August increased by 1.3%, with expansion in eleven areas and also in eleven subsectors. The main positive impacts, by area, came from São Paulo (2.0%), Paraná  (2.9%) and Northeast Region (1.7%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-1.1%) exerted the most relevant negative highlight. In the analysis by subsector, the main positive contributions on the average of industry came from food products and beverages (4.5%) means of transportation (5.8%) and metal products (5.6%). On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.4%) and apparel (-5.9%) had the most important decreases.

 

 

REAL PAYROLL

 

In August, the seasonally adjusted indicator relative to real payroll of industry workers changed by 0.3% in comparison with the immediately previous month. It was he third positive result, with accumulated increase of 1.2%. As a result, the quarterly moving average index increased by 0.4% in the quarters which ended in July and in August and accumulated 0.7% of increase in the previous three months.

 

In comparison with similar periods in the previous year, the results remained positive: 4.7% in the monthly index, which had had positive rates since April 2006, and 4.8% accumulated in the year. The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, changed from 3.6%, in July to 3.9%, in August, and has remained on an upward trend since December 2006.

 

A total of thirteen of the fourteen areas surveyed contributed to the increase of 4.7% of real payroll in comparison with August in the previous year. The main positive influence came from São apulo (2.8%), due, mainly, to the increase of salaries of means of transportation (8.3%), chemical products (8.5%) and machines, electronic appliances and equipment (6.9%). It is also worth mentioning Rio Grande do Sul (14.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (8.6%). The only decrease occurred in Espírito Santo (-3.3%).

 

By subsector, still in the monthly indicator, the real payroll increased in fourteen of the eighteen subsectors surveyed, with the most significant positive contributions coming from means of transportation (8.7%), food products and beverages (5.2%), chemical products (9.1%) and metal products (10.7%). On the other hand, the main decreases came from paper and printing (-7.0%), wood (-11.2%) and tobacco (-13.8%). 

 

The indicator accumulated in the year increased by 4.8%, with a higher real payroll in all the areas surveyed. The main positive impact came from São Paulo (3.7%), because of chemical products (13.9%), means of transportation (3.6%) and food products and beverages (3.5%). It is also worth mentioning Rio Grande do Sul (7.2%), Northeast Region (6.5%) and Minas Gerais (5.5%). In these two areas, the positive highlights were: metal products (44.3%) and food products and beverages (11.7%); food products and beverages (7.0%) and petroleum refining and alcohol (28.7%) and food products and beverages (10.8%) and mining and quarrying industry (11.9%), respectively.

 

In terms of subsector, also considering the index accumulated in the year, thirteen of the eighteen activities surveyed had increase in real payroll; the main positive contributions came from chemical products (11.9%), food products and beverages (6.6%), mining and quarrying industry (16.3%) and means of transportation (4.5%). Among the falling subsectors, the most significant decreases were those of paper and printing (-4.2%), wood (-8.0%) and footwear and leather articles (-2.0%).
