The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics celebrates, in 2007, the  4oth anniversary of The National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) by means of more investments in the training of interviewers in order to improve data quality. This year, the training program has been reformulated with the support of the National school of Statistical Sciences (ENCE) and this will enable the interviewers to deal with digital data and to use hand held computers. Besides that, IBGE has created a logo, a folder and a video to celebrate the occasion. PNAD 2006 will be released on September 14th.

The annual training of approximately 200 supervisors and interviewers, responsible for the collection of information for PNAD, will take place between August 26 and September 5, in Ilhéus (BA). Later on, the supervisors who participated in this training program will train approximately two thousand interviewers in the whole country. In order to reformulate the training and increase the number of instructors, IBGE has counted on the support of the National School of Statistical Sciences – ENCE. The meeting will be opened by the Director of the Surveys Department, Wasmália Barata Bivar, of the Head of Labor and Income Department, Marcia Quintslr, of the Manager of Integration for PNAD, Cimar Azeredo, of the PNAD Manager, Maria Lucia Vieira, of the Head of Training of ENCE, Sandra Furtado, among other managers and technicians from IBGE and from the Ministry of Education. The president of IBGE, Eduardo Pereira Nunes, will close the meeting on September 05th.

PNAD is a system of surveys by household samples, of national coverage, which presents information about demography, health, migration, fertility, housing conditions and household equipment, education and culture, labor, economic conditions of the household, among others. In order to make it possible to continuously investigate these and other themes, structuring was done in two parts: a basic summary (overall characteristics of the population, education, labor, income, housing, migration and fertility) and complementary surveys (marriage rates, health, food security, income transfer, child labor, among others) which are defined at each edition. From 1967 to 1970, PNAD was conducted every three months, and started to happen on a yearly basis in 1971. Since the beginning, the survey has covered five Brazilian regions, except the rural area of the North Region, which was incorporated to the survey in 2004, only.

The supplement of PNAD 2007 ,which will be released in 2008, is about “Education of Youngster and Adults’” and “Professional and Technological Education”, done in partnership with the Ministry of Education. In 2008, the theme will be health, and the survey will receive support from the Ministry of Health. Together with the supplements of 1998 and 2003, this one will be used in the survey time series. In 2009, the survey will fulfill the demand from the Ministry of Social Development and Combat to Hunger, related to Food Security, and similar to the supplement released in 2004.
