In May, industrial employment grew by 0.2% in relation to April

In May, the industrial employment had a positive change of 0.2% compared to April, in the series without seasonal influence.  This index is positive and accumulates an expansion of 0.6% in the last two months.  In the comparisons with the year of 2005, the results continue negative: -0.4% in relation to May of the previous year, -0.6% in the indicator accumulated in the year and -0.2% in the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months.

With the positive change from April to May, the quarterly moving average indicator continued practically stable in the comparison of the quarters closed in May and April (0.1%).

 

In relation to May 2005, industrial employment falls in eight among 14 surveyed areas

In relation to May 2005, the rate of -0.4% was determined, mainly, by the reduction of employment in eight among 14 surveyed localities and eleven among eighteen activities. In the analysis by regions, stand out Rio Grande do Sul (-7.6%), Paraná (-4.0%) and Northeast Region (-2.4%). The main responsible for the negative results in the three localities were, respectively: footwear and leather articles (-14.8%); wood (-16.9%) and apparel (-7.2%).  Regarding the national index, footwear and leather articles (-11.4%) and machines and equipment (-6.5%) brought the main negative results.

Among the industries which influenced positively the overall index, in the total of the country, it may be observed the segments of food products and beverages (8.5%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (6.8%).  In the analysis by regions, the main positive results were of the North and Central West Region (9.8%) and São Paulo (0.6%), influenced, mainly, by the results of food products and beverages, respectively, 27.1% and 13.8%.

In the indicator accumulated (January-May), it could be observed reduction of 0.6% in the number of workers. Among the nine localities in which the dismissals surpassed the admissions, the most significant negative contributions came from Rio Grande do Sul (-8.9%), Northeast Region (-3.1%) and Paraná (-3.5%).  On the other hand, the North and Central West Region (9.7%) and São Paulo (0.7%) registered the main positive influences on the overall result. In national level, employment fell in ten segments and the main negative influences came from footwear and leather articles (-13.2%) and machines and equipment (-8.1%).  On the other hand, stand out the increases observed in food products and beverages (9.0%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (5.6%).

It can also be observed that from April (0.0%) to May (-0.2%), the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months continues in a downward trend.


Number of hours paid was almost stable in May

In May, the number of hours paid to the workers of industry was almost stable (0.1%) in relation to April, in the series without seasonal influence. The quarterly moving average indicator, as a consequence, decreased by 0.4% among the quarters closed in May and April.  The number of hours paid fell by 0.2% in the comparison with the same month of the previous year as well as in the indicator accumulated in the year, while in the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months it had no change (0.0%).

The reduction by 0.2% in the number of hours paid, in the monthly indicator, shows the negative results in seven among fourteen localities and ten among eighteen surveyed segments.  In the analysis by sectors, the main negative results came from apparel (-7.3%), footwear and leather articles (-8.0%) and wood (-11.2%).  On the other hand, the most important positive results came from food products and beverages (6.6%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (10.8%).

Still in the comparison with May 2005, the three states of the South Region brought the main negative results to the overall result:  Rio Grande do Sul (-7.7%), Paraná (-5.6%) and Santa Catarina (-3.6%).  In the industry of RS, thirteen among eighteen surveyed activities reduced the number of hours paid, among these, the most significant were footwear and leather articles (-11.2%), machines and equipment (-11.3%) and rubber and plastic (-14.0%).  In Paraná, wood (-22.6%) and apparel (-10.8%) brought the main negative results, and in Santa Catarina, stood out the industry of wood (-10.3%).  The two main positive influences in the overall result came from the North and Central West Region (9.6%) and São Paulo (1.7%), where the activity of food products and beverages was the main highlight, with rates of respectively, 23.2% and 10.0%.

The indicator accumulated in the period January-May registered a negative change of 0.2%.  In this result prevailed the results from nine areas and eleven sectors.  The localities responsible for the main decreases in the number of hours paid were Rio Grande do Sul (-8.0%), Paraná (-5.5%) and Northeast Region (-3.2%).  The North and Central West Region (9.9%) and São Paulo (2.3%) brought the major positive influences.  In the analysis by areas, the most relevant negative results, in the total of the country, were wood (-15.1%) and machines and equipment (-7.0%).  The industries of food products and beverages (6.7%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (9.9%) brought the most significant positive results.

The index accumulated in the last twelve months did not change (0.0%) and maintains a downward trend since June 2005 (2.7%).

In relation to April, payroll increased by 0.7%
 
In May 2006, the value, without seasonal influence, of the real payroll of the workers in industry increased by 0.7% in relation to the previous month.  This positive result was registered after two consecutive months of fall, in which a decrease of 2.8% was observed. As a consequence, the quarterly moving average indicator continues in a downward trend, having a decrease of 0.7% between the quarters closed in May and April.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll did not change (0.0%).  In the other indicators the following positive rates were registered: 0.3% in the index accumulated in the year and 1.7% in the index accumulated in the last twelve months.

In the comparison May 06/ May 05 (0.0%), ten among fourteen surveyed localities had positive indexes.  The main influence came from Minas Gerais (9.3%), due to the increase of the payroll of basic metallurgy (8.6%), machines and equipment (28.2%) and food products and beverages (11.7%).  It is worth mentioning also, the North and Central West Region (7.7%), due, mainly, to food products and beverages (12.8%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (18.2%); the Northeast Region (2.9%), due to mining and quarrying (10.6%) and footwear and leather articles (15.1%); and São Paulo (0.4%), due to chemical products (29.1%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (9.0%).   On the other hand, the main reduction came from Rio de Janeiro (-14.2%), due mainly to mining and quarrying (-62.0%).  This atypical result is related to the high base of comparison, consequence of a profit sharing distribution in an important company of the sector, in May 2005.  The second most important reduction was observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-5.7%), especially footwear and leather articles (-16.4%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-16.6%).  In Paraná (-4.9%), it was relevant the decrease in the payroll of food products and beverages (-11.5%) and wood (-12.1%).

In the analysis by sectors, still in the monthly indicator, the real payroll fell in ten among eighteen investigated industrial activities.  The main negative results were observed in mining and quarrying (-25.9%), machines and equipment (-7.3%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-9.3%). On the other hand, the major positive results were observed in chemical products (13.2%), transportation (4.4%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (9.8%).

The indicator accumulated from January to May, of the real payroll, increased by 0.3%, with growth in nine among fourteen surveyed localities.  The main positive contributions came from Minas Gerais (7.1%) with increase in transportation (17.3%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (25.4%); North and Central West Region (8.4%) with increase in food products and beverages (12.5%) and electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (23.6%); and Espírito Santo (12.4%), with increase in basic metallurgy (13.6%) and non-metallic minerals (24.4%).  On the other hand, the main reductions in payroll were observed in Rio Grande do Sul (-8.1%) with decrease in   footwear and leather articles (-23.4%) and chemical products (-14.1%) and Paraná (-5.8%), with decrease in food products and beverages (-9.5%) and wood (-18.9%).

Still in the analysis of the index accumulated in the year, there was increase in the payroll of nine among eighteen activities.  The most relevant positive influences were observed in chemical products (11.7%), electronic, electric and communication machines and equipment (11.3%) and transportation (3.6%), while machines and equipment (-10.7%), footwear and leather articles (-13.8%) and wood (-13.5%) brought the main negative results.

The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months increased by 1.7%, lower than the one of April (2.2%) and continuing in a downward trend since January 2005.
