In May, the national index of construction changed 1.47%

The National Index of Construction, calculated by IBGE in partnership with

CAIXA - Caixa Econômica Federal, changed 1.47% in May, which means an increase of 0.68 percentage point vis-à-vis April (0.79%). This result was a consequence of the wage raises that occurred in several states. The current index remained very close to that of May 2004 (1.43%), a difference of 0.04 percentage point. With the current result, the index accumulated 4.16% in the year and 10.93% in the last twelve months.

The national cost per square meter went up to R$ 528.80, out of which R$ 309.89 are relative to materials and R$ 218.91 to labor force.

In May, materials presented deceleration in relation to April, dropping from 0.86% to 0.77%. The accumulated index of the year was 3.90% and in twelve months, 13.32%. On the other hand, influenced by wage raises, labor force had a pronounced acceleration, changing 2.48% or 1.81 percentage point above the rate of April (0.67%). In the year, it increased 4.52% and in the last twelve months, 7.72%.

Central West and Southeast Regions presented the highest results in May

The Central West Region presented the highest increase (2.47%), resulting from collective agreements of Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás and Federal District. In the Southeast, with an index of 2.15%, the major influence came from the rate of São Paulo (3.03%), also due to wage raises. The other regional results, all below the national index (1.47%) were, in decreasing order: 0.87% in the North, 0.82% in the South and 0.51% in the Northeast.

Regarding the accumulated rates in the year, the Southeast remained with the highest rate (4.57%), followed by the North, with 4.38%. The Northeast (3.95%) and the Central West (3.93%) presented similar results. Finally, the South Region presented the lowest accumulated index in the year (3.31%).

In the last twelve months and considering the more pronounced indexes, the leadership remained with the Northeast (11.90%) followed in second place by the Southeast (11.06%). The other results in this period were the following: 10.18% in the South; 9.99% in the Central West and finally, 9.80 % in the North.

The regional costs were the following: R$ 570.19 (Southeast); R$ 530.02 (South); R$ 506.75 (Central West); R$ 501.90 (North) and R$ 482.07 (Northeast).

Collective agreements influenced the indexes in several states

Among the indexes in the states, the highest indexes were influenced by wage readjustments: 4.68% (Mato Grosso); 4.46% (Acre); 3.03% (São Paulo); 2.88% (Goiás); 2.81% (Federal District) and 1.56% (Santa Catarina).

The lowest results in the month occurred in Ceará (0.21%), Maranhão and Pernambuco (0.28%). Amapá presented the highest accumulated result in the year (9.99%) and in twelve months (15.58%).
