New heights of Bandeira and Cristal Peaks already available

IBGE releases, today, the 2nd phase of results of "Projeto Pontos Culminantes", whose main purpose is to precisely measure the height of the highest mountains in the Country.

According to the new measurements, the height of Pico da Bandeira, which was 2889.8m, increased to 2891.9m, and that of Pico do Cristal, formerly 2780m decreased to 2769.7m.

Both Bandeira and Cristal Peaks are located in the borderline between Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. This time, besides IBGE and the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), the expedition conducted on October 22nd and 23rd, had the participation and cooperation of the 5th Surveying Division of the Army. Once more, the technology used was the GPS 9Global Positioning System) receiver - a sophisticated system of navigation and satellite positioning.

Expedition to Caparaó Mountain Range leads to measurements of the 3 highest points in Brazil

During the expedition to Caparaó Mountain Range, besides Peak of Bandeira and Cristal Peak, other three Brazilian points have also been measured. However, the results will be analyzed by the Geography Department of IBGE, which is currently evaluating if those other points can be considered peaks.

Monte Roraima: the next step

The next step of the project will be the measurement of project, planned for 2005, is the measurement of Monte Roraima, located on the Pacaraima Mountain Range, in the state of Roraima. IBGE will take the opportunity and also employ the infrastructure in the Region to measure the North end of the country.
