In Brasília, IBGE celebrates its 89th anniversary and holds 3rd National Meeting of IBGE Servants

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics celebrates, on May 29, its 89th anniversary, at the IBGE Ecological Reserve of Roncador (RECOR), in Brasília (DF). Scheduled to take place in Brasília for the first time, the event, which starts at 5 pm, will gather servants and guests in a preserved area of more than 1,400 hectares, where a number of surveys about the Brazilian Cerrado area carried out. This year's anniversary is the starting point of the 90th anniversary celebration of the Institute, in 2026.

Together with the celebration, the IBGE will be holding, on May 28 and 29, from 8 am on,  the 3rd National Meeting of IBGE Servants, an event where key issued will be discussed, for example, the implementation of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (Singed), a new governance model for statistical, geoscientific and data production in Brazil.

"Simultaneously with the 3rd National Meeting of Servants, the entire IBGE community will be enthusiastically celebrating the 89 years of existence of the main pubic surevy institute in Brazil. the IBGE covers virtually two thirds of the history of our National Statistical System implemented in 1871,” observed president Marcio Pochmann.

The 1st National meeting of IBGE Servants was held on November 16 and 17, 2023, at the Parada de Lucas Branch, in the North Zone of Rio Janeiro. the 2nd Meeting took place on May 27 and 28, at Palácio da Fazenda, downtown Rio.

IBGE Ecological Reserve

Located on Rodovia DF001 Km 38 - Lago Sul, Brasília-DF, the IBGE Ecological Reserve belongs to the Environmental protection Area of river basins Bacias do Gama and Cabeça de Veado (Apa Gama and Cabeça de Veado – implemented by District Law 9,417/1986), which encompasses the Botanic Garden of Brasília (JBB), Farm Água Limpa of the University of Brasília (UnB) and ARIE Capetinga-Taquara.

The entire area is considered to be of great relevance to the preservation of biodiversity and stands out as one of the areas in the Cerrado Biome with the biggest concentration of scientific surveys in the fields of ecology, botany and zoology. 

The Reserve is a reference for the understanding of the structure and the functioning of the Cerrado, of its biodiversity and of its ecosystemic services, as a national and global reference in several ecological research networks, established as a partnership with more than 500 national (66%) and foreign (34%) institutions. In addition, RECOR is a national and global reference site in the production of Geodetic information.
