Industrial output grows in six of the fifteen surveyed places

With the positive change of 0.2% in the national industrial output, six of the fifteen places surveyed had positive rates between January and February 2018, in the seasonally adjusted series.

The main highs were: in Paraná (3.3%), offsetting part of January's 4.2% drop; in the Northeast Region (2.6%), returning part of the 2.9% loss, accumulated since September 2017; in Pernambuco (1.3%), advancing for the second month in a row with a cumulative high of 2.5%; and Rio de Janeiro (1.2%), offsetting the 2.3% drop in January.

Santa Catarina (0.9%) and Bahia (0.9%) were the other places with positive rates in January. Goiás (0.0%) repeated the previous month's level.

The negative results of the Industry were in Pará (-10.9%), which eliminated the high of 6.1% in January; in Amazonas (-5.9%), which accumulated gains of 12.7% in the last two months; and in Mato Grosso (-4.4%), which intensified January's drop (-0.5%).

Minas Gerais (-2.8%), Espírito Santo (-1.1%), Ceará (-0.7%), São Paulo (-0.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.1%) were the other places with negative rates.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry change 0.3% in the quarter ended in February 2018, compared to the previous month's level, keeping the upward trend started in May 2017. Seven places grew, with a highlight to Amazonas (4.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.2%) and Santa Catarina (1.1%).  The sharpest drops were in Pará (-2.2%), Minas Gerais (-0.9%) and Espírito Santo (-0.7%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector grew 2.8% in February 2018, with positive results in nine of the fifteen places surveyed. This month, Amazonas had the biggest high (16.2%), driven to a great extent by the sectors of computer, electronic and optical products; of other Transportation Equipment; and beverages. Santa Catarina (6.2%), Pernambuco (5.0%), São Paulo (4.8%), Bahia (3.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.0%) also had highs above the national average (2.8%), whereas Ceará (2.8%), Northeast Region (2.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.3%) close the set of places with production growth.

Minas Gerais (-6.4%) and Espírito Santo (-6.3%) had the greatest decreases in February 2018. The first driven, to a great extent, by the segments of mining and quarrying industries and of coke, petroleum products and biofuels; and the second, by the sectors of pulp, paper and paper products; non-metallic mineral products; basic metals; and of mining and quarrying industries. The other negative figures were posted in Mato Grosso (-2.3%), Goiás (-2.0%), Pará (-1.0%) and Paraná (-0.2%).

In the cumulative index of the year (4.3%), over the same period of 2017, ten of the fifteen places surveyed grew, with a highlight to Amazonas (24.5%), Santa Catarina (8.5%), Pará (7.2%), São Paulo (6.2%) and Bahia (4.4%), which grew above the average of the national industry (4.3%). Rio de Janeiro (4.1%), Ceará (3.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%), Northeast Region (1.7%) and Pernambuco (0.9%) close the set of places with positive results. However, Espírito Santo (-7.8%), Minas Gerais (-1.4%), Mato Grosso (-1.0%), Paraná 
(-0.9%) and Goiás (-0.4%) had decrease in the industrial output.

The cumulative index over 12 months (3.0%) had the greatest high since June 2011 (3.6%) and kept the upward trend initiated in June 2016 (-9.7%). By areas, 12 of the 15 places surveyed grew in February 2018, but just eight had a higher dynamism over the indexes of last January, following the move of the national industry, which went from 2.8% to 3.0%.

Amazonas (6.1% to 6.9%), Mato Grosso (3.0% to 3.6%), Bahia (0.0% to 0.5%), São Paulo (3.9% to 4.4%), Pernambuco (-2.3% to -1.8%) and Ceará (2.7% to 3.1%) had the highest gains between January and February 2018. The main reductions between the two periods occurred in Minas Gerais (1.5% to 0.7%) and Paraná (3.7% to 3.3%).

IN the comparison between the cumulative index of Janeiro-February of 2018 and the last quarter of 2017 (both non-adjusted series), nine of the fifteen places surveyed had loss of dynamism, with a highlight to Mato Grosso (11.8% to -1.0%), Goiás (10.6% to -0.4%), Espírito Santo (-2.2% to -7.8%), Pará (11.1% to 7.2%), Rio de Janeiro (7.8% to 4.1%) and Paraná (2.4% to -0.9%). The biggest gains were in Amazonas (9.2% to 24.5%), Bahia (-0.6% to 4.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0% to 3.5%).
