Industrial employment decreased by -0.2% in October

The rate broke a stability observed since August /08, in the comparison month/ immediately previous month (series with seasonal adjustment).  In the comparison with October/07, the index recorded the 28th hike (1.6%), however, with the lowest expansion since March/07 (1.5%).  In the index accumulated in the year, the gain in employment was 2.6%.  The real payroll decreased by -0.2% from September to October (already with seasonal adjustment), after increasing by 2.7% in the immediately previous month.   The rates continued positive in relation to the same month of 2007 (5.1%) and in the index accumulated in the year (6.6%).

EMPLOYED SALARIED PERSONS

In October, the industrial employment decreased by -0.2% compared to September, in the series seasonally adjusted, after two months of stability.  The quarterly moving average index broke a trend of growth observed for four months, when it accumulated gain of 1.1% and was stable (0.0%) from September to October.

In relation to the same month of the previous year, the industrial employment brought the 28th positive rate (1.6%), but was the lowest result since March/ 2007 (1.5%).  In the index accumulated in the year, the employed personnel increased by 2.6% and in the annualized rate, accumulated in the last twelve months (2.7%), the result was below the one of September (2.9%).

In the comparison October 08/ October 07 (1.6%), the number of workers increased in eleven among eighteen segments and in ten among fourteen areas surveyed.  Among the sectors, the major positive results, on the national average, came from machines and equipment (8.3%), transportation (7.1%), electronic material and communication equipment (9.4%) food products and beverages (2.1%).  By area, the most relevant positive contributions were recorded by São Paulo (1.7%), Minas Gerais (5.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.9%), where stood out, respectively the segments:  transportation (6.4%) and electronic material and communication equipment (9.5%); food products and beverages (9.1%) and non-metallic minerals (15.4%); machines and equipment (22.6%) and metal products (12.5%); and metal products (25.9%) and basic metallurgy (12.9%).

On the other hand, also in the same comparison, Santa Catarina (-2.5%) and  Pernambuco (-1.3%) brought the most important negative results among the areas, while by sectors, in the total of the country, apparel (-7.3%), wood (-10.9%), footwear and leather articles (-5.2%) and textiles (-5.4%) were the segments with the main negative results in the formation of the overall rate.

In the index accumulated in the year (2.6%), eleven areas and twelve segments increased the number of employed persons, in relation to the same period of the previous year.  São Paulo (3.6%), Minas Gerais (4.6%) and the North and Central West Region (3.4%) recorded the major positive influence, while Santa Catarina (-0.9%) recorded the major negative result.  In the analysis by industrial segments, the main positive contributions in the national result came from machines and equipment (11.6%), transportation (9.7%), electronic material and communication equipment (12.0%) and food products and beverages (2.6%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-8.7%), apparel (-5.5%) and wood (-8.3%) were the negative highlights.

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

The industrial sector, in October, reduced the number of hours paid in the comparison with the immediately previous month, already seasonally adjusted (-0.3%), after increasing by 0.7% in September.   Following the trend observed by the industrial activity, the number of hours paid in the industry, according to the quarterly moving average, also broke the trend of growth recorded in the last four months showing a slight negative change of 0.1% between September and October.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the number of hours paid, which increased by 1.4%, maintained the sequence of twenty-nine months of positive rates, but with the lowest result since June 2007 (1.0%).  In the indexes for longer periods, the results were also positive: 2.5% in the index accumulated in the year and 2.6% in the last twelve months, both showing reduction compared to the results of September (2.7% in the two indexes).

In the comparison October 08/ October 07, a rate of 1.4% may be observed in the number of hours paid, influenced by the increase in the majority (eleven) of the fourteen sectors surveyed.  Among those which had expansion, stood out Minas Gerais (5.9%) and São Paulo (1.0%), with increase in food products and beverages (9.7%), in the first area, and of machines and equipment (5.6%), in the second.  On the other hand, Pernambuco (-4.9%), Northeast Region (-0.6%) and Santa Catarina (-0.7%) were the only three areas which brought negative rates, influenced, mainly, by the decrease in industries of food products and beverages in the first two areas (-5.8% and -3.3%, respectively) and apparel (-12.8%) and wood (-14.8%), in the third one.

In the analysis by sectors, there was expansion in eleven among eighteen sectors surveyed, and the main influences came from machines and equipment (8.9%), transportation (6.4%), non-metallic minerals (7.6%), electronic material (6.4%) and food products and beverages (1.7%).  On the other hand, stood out the bad performance of apparel (-7.1%), wood (-11.2%) and footwear and leather articles (-5.2%).

In the index accumulated in January-October, the increase of 2.5% in the total hours paid influenced, mainly, the positive rate observed in eleven areas and twelve sectors surveyed.  The industry of São Paulo, with expansion of 3.5%, was the one that most influenced positively the national index, especially the segments of machines and equipment (9.9%) and transportation (9.9%).  It is worth mentioning the positive results from Minas Gerais (5.2%), as a consequence of transportation (17.6%) and food products and beverages (6.4%), and North and Central West Region (3.4%), influenced, mainly, by food products and beverages (9.4%).  On the other hand, the industries of Pernambuco (-1.5%), Santa Catarina (-0.3%) and Espírito Santo (-1.1%) brought negative results on the total hours paid.

In terms of sectors, the expansions which most influenced the rate of the general industry continued to be recorded by the segments of machines and equipment (12.5%), transportation (10.6%) and  electronic material (10.7%), while the most relevant decreases were recorded by the sectors of footwear and leather articles (-9.5%), apparel (-5.5%) and wood (-8.3%).

In summary, the reduction observed in the number of hours paid, from September to October (-0.3%) and the loss of rhythm in the indexes for longer periods, follow the deceleration of the rhythm of growth of the industrial production, in a context of increase of uncertainty in the international economic scenario.

REAL PAYROLL

In October, the value of the real payroll of the workers of industry, already with seasonal adjustment, changed by -0.2% in relation to the immediately previous month, after growing by 2.7% in September.  The negative change of October did not interrupt the trend of growth, as shows the index of the quarterly average of October (0.7%), measured between the quarters closed in September and October, which grew for four consecutive quarters, accumulating gain of 3.2%.
In the comparisons with similar periods of the previous year, the results continued positive: 5.1% compared to October 2007 and 6.6% in the index accumulated in the year.  The index accumulated in the last twelve months was almost stable between September (6.7%) and October (6.6%).

The value of the real payroll of October increased by 5.1% in the comparison with the same month of the previous year and recorded increases in fourteen areas surveyed.  The main positive contribution was recorded by São Paulo (3.9%), showing, mainly, the wage increment in transportation (6.1%), metal products (18.2%) and non-metallic minerals (25.1%).  Following, stood out Minas Gerais (10.3%) and Paraná (10.5%), mainly due to influences in transportation (24.5%), non-metallic minerals (20.4%) and mining and quarrying (23.6%) in the first; and machines and equipment (34.7%) and food products and beverages (13.8%), in the second.

Also in the comparison with October 2007, the real payroll increased in eleven among eighteen surveyed segments.  In this analysis, the most significant positive results were recorded by transportation (8.9%), machines and equipment (9.8%) and non-metallic minerals (21.1%).  On the other hand, the most relevant negative results were recorded by paper and printing (-5.3%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-7.8%).

The index accumulated showed expansion of 6.6%, recording in all the areas increases in the real payroll.  In this type of comparison, the positive results of major significance was recorded by São Paulo (7.5%), Minas Gerais (9.5%) and Paraná (8.3%).  In the state of São Paulo as in the state of Minas Gerais, the highlight came from transportation, with rates of respectively, 12.7% and 16.1%.  In Paraná, the activity with major positive influence was machines and equipment (32.7%).

In the analysis by sectors, thirteen sectors increased the value of the real payroll.  Among these, it is worth mentioning transportation (12.9%), machines and equipment (9.4%), chemical products (10.5%) and metal products (12.8%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-6.3%) and paper and printing (-3.1%) recorded the major reductions.
