As part of the celebration of the World Environment Day (June 05th), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics IIBGE) will hold, from Monday to Wednesday next week (June 2, 3 and 4), an Environment Expo. The objective of this event is to disseminate environmental data produced or compiled by the Institute, in order to provide elements to the formulation of public policies and measures concerning the territory and the environment, as well as to stimulate and reinforce the environmental conscience of society as a whole, besides creating measures directed to environmental protection and education.

During the event there will be the release of several new products, exhibitions of maps, posters and thematic photographs, besides presentations and discussions about the main current studies and works in the environmental field.

The event, which will take place at IBGE’s Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), located at 706, Gal Canabarro Street, in Rio de Janeiro, is free and open to the public.

IBGE has a significant amount of relevant information to the management of the territory and the evaluation of environmental quality, and it has been enriched throughout the years. Besides producing basic data, the institute also compiles, organizes and releases information concerning the environment produced by other public and private institutions.

Among the highlights of the Environmental Expo of IBGE are the releases of Indicators of Sustainable Development 2008 (IDS 2008), of the Map of Insects and Other Endangered Land Invertebrates, of an Estimate of the Industrial Air Pollution Potential of the State of Rio de Janeiro and of a Database about Vegetation in the Legal Amazon. There is also a web system for the exchange of scientific information about botanic and zoological collections.
