Industrial employment decreased by –0.4% in January

From December/07 to January/08, in the series seasonally adjusted, employment in industry decreased by –0.4%, second consecutive negative result in this type of comparison.  However, the monthly indicator increased by 2.8% compared to the same month of the previous year, maintaining a sequence of 19 consecutive positive rates.  The hike accumulated in the last 12 months was 2.3%, slightly above the result of last December (2.2%).  The real payroll increased by 2.9% in the comparison month/ immediately previous month (adjusted series).  In the monthly comparison, the result reached 7.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, the best rate since December 2004 (10.7%).

After thirteen months of growth, period in which it accumulated an increase of 3.8%, in January the industrial employment had the second consecutive decrease of – 0.4% compared to the immediately previous month, in the series without seasonal influence. With this, the quarterly moving average index, which had an ascending trend since November 2006, was stable between the quarters closed in January and December (-0.1%).

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the result maintained a sequence of nineteen positive rates, with increase of 2.8%.  The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months (2.3%) was slightly above the result of December of the last year (2.2%).

In the monthly indicator, the growth of 2.8% in the number of workers was a consequence, mainly, of the positive results in the majority (12) of the fourteen localities and eleven of the eighteen segments. São Paulo (4.7%), Minas Gerais (2.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.8%) and Northeast Region (2.1%) brought the main positive results, especially the sectors: machines and equipment (12.5%) and communication and electronic machines and equipment (17.3%) in the first locality; transportation (13.9%) and electronic and communication machines and equipment (20.2%), in Minas Gerais;  metal products (43.4%) and machines and equipment (18.9%), in Rio Grande do Sul; and petroleum refining and alcohol production (29.9%), in the Northeast industry.  On the other hand, the main negative result came from Espírito Santo (-4.9%).

In the analysis by sectors, the highlights in the monthly indicator were: machines and equipment (12.5%), transportation (10.8%), metal products (11.6%) and communication and electronic machines and equipment (12.5%).  On the other hand, the main negative results came from footwear and leather articles (-10.3%), wood (-8.1%) and apparel (-3.3%).

Also in the comparison with similar periods of the previous year, a lower rhythm of growth of employment was observed between the fourth quarter of 2007 (3.5%) and January 2008 (2.8%).  It is worth mentioning that the hirings of industry usually concentrate in the last quarter of the year and, in 2007, following the dynamism observed in the production the result of 3.5% was the highest since the fourth quarter of 2004.  The deceleration between the two periods was observed in half among the eighteen surveyed segments.  The major differences in terms of magnitude of the rate were observed in petroleum refining and alcohol production, which changed from 14.9% to 9.4%, and food products and beverages, from 3.9% to 0.8%.

The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, in an upward trend since September 2006, had, in January (2.3%), the major rate since September 2005 (2.4%).

 

NUMBER OF HOURS PAID

The number of hours paid to the workers of industry, in January, registered change of -0.3% in relation to December, in the series without seasonal influence, second consecutive negative rate, accumulating reduction of 0.7% between January and November.  The indicator of quarterly moving average was almost stable between the quarters closed in January and December (-0.2%), after a sequence of fourteen consecutive positive results.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the number of hours paid maintained a sequence of twenty positive rates, with increase of 2.1% in January, due, mainly, to the contributions of twelve among fourteen localities and ten among eighteen surveyed segments.  In terms of sectors, the major increase in the overall result came from machines and equipment (12.8%), metal products (12.9%), transportation (11.1%) and communication and electronic machines and equipment (12.2%).  On the other hand, footwear and leather articles (-12.4%), wood (-8.7%) and apparel (-3.4%) brought the main negative results.

 Also in the monthly comparison, the localities with the most important positive results in the national result were: São Paulo (3.8%), especially machines and equipment (11.8%) and transportation (10.5%); Paraná (3.3%), with the major positive results also coming from these sectors (32.0% and 19.1% respectively); Minas Gerais (2.0%), where stood out electronic and communication machines and equipment (25.4%) and transportation (14.2%); and Northeast Region (1.5%), with the most significant increase in petroleum refining and alcohol production (22.1%).  On the other hand, the main negative influences on the overall result came from Espírito Santo (-4.6%) and Pernambuco (-0.6%).

Finally, the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months continued in an upward trend, initiated in September 2006 and had, in January (1.9%), the major rate since September 2005 (2.1%).


REAL PAYROLL

In January, the value of the real payroll of the workers of industry, seasonally adjusted, increased 2.9% in relation to the immediately previous month, causing a reversal in the same 2.9% of decrease accumulated in the last two months of 2007. With these results, the indicator of quarterly moving average was stable (0.0%) between the quarters closed in December and January.

In the comparison with January 2007, the real payroll increased by 7.2%, twenty-second consecutive positive rate and major result since December 2004 (10.7%). Thirteen among fourteen surveyed localities contributed positively, especially São Paulo (9.7%), due, mainly, to the increase in chemical products (44.4%), transportation (14.6%), and electronic and communication machines and equipment (13.9%).  Following, it is worth mentioning Minas Gerais (8.1%), Northeast Region (6.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (5.2%).   Transportation (27.1%) and machines and equipment (32.0%) stood out in the expansion of the payroll in the industry of the state; in the Northeast Region, the highlights came from chemical products (13.1%) and footwear and leather articles (10.6%), while metal products (40.0%) and transportation (14.6%) brought the major positive results on the payroll of Rio Grande do Sul.  On the other hand, the only decrease occurred in Espírito Santo (-1.4%).

 In the analysis by sectors, in the monthly indicator, the value of the real payroll increased in thirteen among eighteen sectors.  The main positive contributions came from transportation (14.3%), chemical products (25.3%), metal products (14.9%) and communication and electronic material (12.0%).  On the other hand, the major decreases came from paper and graphic (-3.8%), footwear and leather articles (-5.8%) and apparel (-2.0%).

The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months of the real payroll increased by 5.6%, major result since September 2005 (5.7%), and has been in an upward trend since December 2006.
