In October, industrial employment decreased by 0.2%

In October, industrial employment had negative change of 0.2% in relation to September, considering the seasonally adjusted series, after increase of 0.5% in the previous month. In comparison with October last year, the index had slight increase (0.2%), the fourth consecutive positive result. The indicator accumulated in the year decreased by 0.3%, and the indicator accumulated in the last twelve months, by 0.4%. Even considering the negative change from September to October, the quarterly moving average index was stable between the quarters ended in October and in September (0.0%). It is worth mentioning that, as observed in industrial production (1.5%), industrial employment has kept a moderate growth rate throughout the year in terms of the quarterly moving average index, with expansion of 0.9% in the comparison October/March.

In relation to October last year, industrial employment increased in 9 of the 14 areas surveyed

 

In the monthly comparison (-0.2%), the number of workers increased in nine of the fourteen areas surveyed, and the main positive influences were registered in: North and Central West Regions (8.8%), São Paulo (0.6%) and Northeast Region (0.9%). The industry of food products and beverages represented the major contribution to the increase of the number of employed persons in the first two places, whereas petroleum refining and alcohol production was the highlight in the Northeast Region. The states of Espírito Santo (3.8%), Pernambuco (1.9%), Santa Catarina (0.4%), Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) and Bahia (0.1%) also had positive results for employment.

 

At national level, industrial employment increased in eleven of the eighteen segments surveyed, being the highlights the positive impacts of food products and beverages (6.8%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (16.7%) and means of transportation (2.3%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from footwear and leather articles (-14.1%), apparel (-6.1%) and machinery and equipment (-3.7%). By area, the most relevant negative changes came from Rio Grande do Sul (-8.0%), Paraná (-1.2%), Minas Gerais (-0.5%) and Ceará (-0.8%).

 

In terms of the indicator accumulated in the year (-0.3%), there was reduction of the number of employed persons in eight of the eleven subsectors surveyed. In the analysis by area, Rio Grande do Sul (-8.7%), with the lowest rate among the localities, was the main negative contribution, being followed by Paraná (-2.5%). In these two states there is a predominance of reductions in the subsectors of footwear and leather articles (Rio Grande do Sul, -22%), and wood (Paraná, -18.0%). On the other hand, the North and Central West regions (9.6%) had more significant positive impact, followed by São Paulo (0.7%). In the analysis by subsector, footwear and leather articles (-13.2%), machinery an equipment (-7.2%) and apparel (-5.4%) were the most significant negative highlights, whereas food products and beverages (8.0%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (13.6%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (4.6%) were the main positive contributions.

 

Number of hours paid was 0.4% lower in relation to September

 

In October, the number of hours paid to industry workers fell by 0.4% in comparison with September, in the seasonally adjusted series, after two consecutive months of growth, a period in which it accumulated increase of 1.0%. With these results, the quarterly moving average index points to slight positive increase (0.2%) between the quarters ended in October and September, interrupting, this way, three consecutive months of fall in this type of comparison. In relation to October last year, there was increase of 0.6% the fifth consecutive positive rate. The other indicators had the following rates: (0.0%) accumulated in the year and (-0.1%) accumulated in the last twelve months.

 

Compared to the same month in the previous year, the number of hours paid increased by 0.6%, with positive contributions from seven localities and nine of the eighteen subsectors surveyed. In terms of subsectors, the main positive influences to the overall rate came from food products and beverages (5.5%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (17.7%), and electronic machines and communication equipment (6.3%). On the contrary, footwear and leather articles (-8.8%) and apparel (-6.6%) were the main negative highlights.

 

Still in terms of the monthly comparison, the areas with the major impacts on the national result were the North and Central West Regions (8.7%), São Paulo (1.6%) and the Northeast Region (1.7%). In the industry of the North and Central West Regions, the number of hours paid of twelve of the eighteen activities increased, especially of food products and beverages (26.3%), wood (5.5%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (14.0%). In São Paulo, the highlights were the subsectors of other products from the manufacturing industry (13.1%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (7.4%). In the industry of the Northeast region, the most significant contribution came from food products and beverages (3.3%). On the other hand, the main negative contributions to the overall result were those from Rio Grande do Sul (-6.9%) and Paraná (-2.0%), where the segments of footwear and leather articles (-18.9%) and wood (-18.1%) were, respectively, the most important negative impacts.

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year (0.0%), seven areas and nine subsectors had increase of the number of hours paid in industry. The main impacts on the national result were: North and Central West Regions (9.2%), São Paulo (1.8%) and Minas Gerais (1.5%). Rio Grande do Sul (-7.8%) and Paraná (-4.2%) were the main negative contributions. In the analysis by subsector, the major increases in the total figure for the country were those of food products and beverages (5.9%), electronic machines and communication equipment (8.6%) and petroleum refining and alcohol production (14.9%). Among the falling subsectors, it is worth mentioning footwear and leather articles (-8.0%) and machinery and equipment (-5.9%).

 

Real payroll increased by 2.0% in relation to September

 

In October, the real payroll of industry workers, not considering the seasonal effects, increased by 2.0% in relation to the previous month. With this third consecutive positive result, real payroll has accumulated increase of 3.1% between July and October. Consequently, the quarterly moving average index increased 1.0% in the quarters ended in October and September, keeping the growing trend started in July 2006, a period in which it has accumulated gain of 1.6%. The comparisons with similar periods last year remain positive: 5.3% in relation to October 2005, and 1.3% accumulated in the year. The indicator accumulated in the last twelve months had slight increase from September (1.1%) to October (1.3%).

 

Considering the monthly indicator, the real payroll showed increment of 5.3%, the fifth consecutive positive rate, with expansion in eleven of the fourteen areas surveyed. The major positive contribution was that of São Paulo (7.9%), due, mainly, to the subsectors of chemical products (36.3%) means of transportation (9.5%) and machinery and equipment (11.5%). It is also worth mentioning the increases in Minas Gerais (9.1%), due to metallurgy (18.3%), electronic machines and communication equipment (19.8%) and in the Northeast Region (5.3%), due to food products and beverages (12.4%), petroleum refining and alcohol production (28.9%) and footwear and leather articles (15.6%). On the other hand, the main losses came from Rio Grande do Sul (-6.1%) and Paraná (-1.7%), due to the fall of footwear and leather articles (-22.5%) and chemical products (-17.1%), in the former, and of food products and beverages (-10.5%) and wood (-13.8%), in the latter.

 

In the analysis by subsector, still in this type of comparison, the real payroll increased in twelve of the eighteen subsectors surveyed, with the main positive impacts being chemical products (17.6%), machinery and equipment (10.5%) and means of transportation (8.3%). On the contrary, the main negative contributions were footwear and leather articles (-10.5%) and rubber and plastic (-5.5%).

 

Considering the indicator accumulated in the year, real payroll increased by 1.3%, with positive rates in fourteen areas. The most relevant positive influences were those of Minas Gerais (8.0%), due to metallurgy (8.5%) and means of transportation (13.7%); of São Paulo (1.3%0, mainly due to chemical products (31.5%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (13.9%); of the North and Central West Regions (6.8%), being the highlight food products and beverages (9.7%) and electronic material and communication equipment (18.2%). The main negative contributions were those of Rio Grande do Sul (-8.0%) and Paraná (-4.6%): in the former, because of footwear and leather articles (-22.1%) and chemical products (-15.4%), and in the latter, due to food products and beverages (-10.3%) and wood (-17.0%).

 

In terms of subsector, there was increase of real payroll of eight of the eighteen activities in the country. The subsectors of chemical products (14.3%) and electronic machines and communication equipment (12.3%) were the main positive contributions, whereas machinery and equipment (-10.6%) and footwear and leather articles (-12.0%) were the main negative ones.
