In September, trade changed by 0.01% in terms of sales and 0.83% in terms of revenue

Volume of sales (0.01%) shows stability of retail trade over previous month

In September, retail trade in the country had rates of 0.01% for volume of sales and of 0.83% for nominal revenue over August (seasonally adjusted series), according to IBGE’s Monthly Survey of Trade. The other comparisons with September 2004, without seasonal adjustment, show increase (5.62%) of volume of sales, which accumulated 4.98% in the year and 6.05% in the last 12 months. The nominal revenue of sales increased by 9.31% over the same month in 2004, accumulating 11.09% in the year and 12.51% in the last 12 months.

The rate of volume of sales in the seasonally adjusted series (0.01%), showed stability of retail trade in relation to the previous month. Volume of sales, calculated for four of the eight activities which form retail trade, was positive in Textiles, apparel and footwear (4.43%) and in the specific field of Hypermarkets and supermarkets (0.16%). The activity Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco remained stable (0.00%). Furniture and household appliances (-2.57%), Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories (-1.98%) and Fuel and Lubricants (-0.08%) registered negative results.

In the comparison September 2005/September 2004, seven of the eight activities of retail trade registered increase of sales: Hypermarkets, supermarkets food products, beverages and tobacco (3.86%), Furniture and household appliances (12.30%), Textiles, apparel and footwear (1.46%); Pharmaceutical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (10.51%), Office, computer and communication equipment (53.51%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles (8.37%) and Other articles of personal and domestic use (18.76%). The only negative result was Fuels and Lubricants (-7.14%).

To the formation of the September rate for volume of sales of retail trade, the major positive impact was the activity Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with change of 3.86%. It was the fifth consecutive positive rate of this activity, influenced by the recent increases of the average income and the stability of the level of employment, according to IBGE’s Monthly Employment Survey (PME). The accumulated changes for this activity in September were 3.57% in the year and 5.23% in the last 12 months.

The second biggest contribution to the result of trade, in terms of volume of sales, was the activity Furniture and Household appliances, with increase of 12.30% in relation to September 2004. Even with this performance above average, the subsector presented deceleration of growth in the month. The rates accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months were 18.13% and 19.20%, respectively. The results were influenced by the improvement of credit conditions offered to consumers.

The activity Other articles of personal and domestic use, which represented the third highest participation in the results of retail trade, changed by 18.76% in terms of the volume of sales compared to September 2004. This activity, which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, sporting goods, toys, etc, is also affected by consumer credit conditions, as well as Furniture and household appliances. In the year, the change rate was 14.32%.

Still in the comparison September 2005/September 2004, the fourth major impact on the results of retail trade was observed in Textiles, apparel and footwear, with 11.46% of growth, influenced by end-of-season sales. The segment accumulated increase in the year (4.59%) and in the last 12 months (3.79%).

The activity Office, computer and communication equipment, with change of 53.51%, in relation to September 2004, accumulated 45.20% in the year. These results are a consequence of the raise of the value of the Brazilian currency (Real) in relation to the dollar, which has caused computer products (hardware and software) to become relatively cheaper, as mentioned in previous releases.

The only negative result registered for volume of sales of retail trade, in the comparison September 05/ September 04 was that of Fuels and lubricants (-7.14%), for the ninth consecutive time. The rise of fuel prices to a level above average (11.52% in 12 months, according to the IPCA), has caused the saving of these products. The segment accumulated falls in the year (-7.02%) and in 12 months (-4.88%).

 

Volume of sales grew by 5.63% in the third quarter

Retail trade, with 5.63% of change of volume of sales, presented, in the third quarter of the year, rate of development above those of the three previous months (3.70%). This result was influenced by the following activities: Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, which changed from 1.11% in the second quarter to 3.96% in the third; Textiles, apparel and footwear, from 2.25% to 9.67%; Other articles of personal and domestic use, from 11.63% to 16.26% and Pharmaceutical, orthopedic, and perfumery articles, from 5.34% to 8.82%.

The subsectors affected by credit transactions showed opposite behavior. An example is Furniture and household appliances, which changed from  21.08% in the second quarter to 15.29% in the third; and Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories, from 2.28% to –0.27%. In the same comparison, more drastic changes were observed in Fuels and Lubricants, from –7.75% in the second quarter to –7.86% in the third; and Construction material, from –5.31% to –7.72%.

Twenty-five of the 27 Federative Units registered positive monthly results (Sep 05/Sep 04) for the volume of sales, with Tocantins (51.42%), Paraíba (38.01%); Sergipe (30.37%) (27.84%) and Rio Grande do Norte (25.01%) as the main highlights. The major contributions to the formation of retail trade came from São Paulo (1.90%), Rio de Janeiro (5.80%), Pernambuco (18.81%), Distrito Federal (16.69%) and Minas Gerais (4.69%).

For extended retail trade, formed by retail trade and the activities Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and accessories and Construction material, the changes observed in the comparison September 05/September 04 were 2.47%, for volume of sales and 6.95%, for nominal revenue of sales. The sector presented changes rates of 3.25% for volume of sales and 10.83% for nominal trade accumulated in 2005, over the same period of the previous year.
