The unemployment rate, in NOVEMBER 2015, was estimated at 7.5% for the group of the six metropolitan areas surveyed, staying stable over October (7.9%). Compared with November 2014, the rate was 2.7 percentage points higher (changed from 4.8% to 7.5%). The unemployed population (1,8 million persons) did not record change against October. In relation to November 2014, there was increase (53.8% or 642 thousand persons more). The employed population was estimated at 22,5 million for the six areas, remaining stable in relation to October and retracting 3.7% (858 thousand persons less) when compared with November 2014. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11,3 million) remained stable in the monthly comparison and presented a reduction of 540 thousand persons with a formal contract in the private sector (-4.6%), in the comparison with November 2014. The average usual real earnings of workers in November was estimated at R$ 2.177.20. This figure was 1.3% lower than that recorded in October (R$ 2,205.43) and 8.8% lower than that obtained in October 2014 (R$ 2,388.29). The average usual real wage bill of the employed persons was estimated at 49.7 billion in November 2015, recording a drop of 0.9% in relation to October. This estimate fell 12.2% in the annual comparison. The actual real wage bill of the employed persons (R$ 50.3 billion), estimated in October 2015, changed -0.4 in the month and -11.6 in the year. In regional terms, the monthly analysis showed that the unemployment rate over last October was stable in all the six Metropolitan Areas. However, in the comparison with November 2014, there was growth of the rate in all the areas: in Recife, from 6.8% to 10.8% (4.0 pp); in Salvador, the rate went from 9.6% to 12.3% (2.7 pp); in Belo Horizonte, from 3.7% to 6.1% (2.4 pp); in Rio de Janeiro, from 3.6% to 5.9% (2.3 pp); in São Paulo from 4.7% to 7.4% (2.7 pp) and in Porto Alegre, from 4.2% to 6.7% (2.5 pp).

The contingent of unemployed persons in November 2015, was estimated at 1,8 million persons in all the six areas surveyed, remaining stable over last October. In the annual comparison (with November 2014), there was increase of 642 thousand persons searching for a job (53.8%). In the regional analysis, the contingent of unemployed persons in relation to last October did not change significantly in the areas surveyed. Compared with November last year, the unemployment increased in all the areas, the highest increase being in Rio de Janeiro (66.5%) and, the lowest, in Salvador (24.0%).

Employment-population ratio remains stable at 51.3%

The employment-population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to persons at working age), estimated in November 2015 at 51.3% for the total of the six areas, remained stable in relation to October. Compared with November 2014, this indicator decreased 2.5 percentage points. In regional terms, the monthly comparison showed stability in all the six Metropolitan Areas. Over November of the previous year, there was retraction in almost all regions, except in Rio de Janeiro, where the index remained stable. The highest drop was seen in Salvador, 4.3 pp (from 53.2% to 48.9%) and the lowest in Recife 2.0 pp (47.5% to 45.5%).

In the monthly comparison, average earnings drop in all Metropolitan Areas

In regional terms, in relation to last October, earnings were stable in: Salvador, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. It fell 3.0% in Rio de Janeiro; 2.6%, in Belo Horizonte and 0.4% in Recife. Over November of 2014, there was widespread decrease, the highest in Rio de Janeiro (-10.0%) and the lowest in Porto Alegre (-6.3%).

Considering the classification by groups of activity for all the six areas, the highest decrease in the average usual real earnings both in relation to October 2015 (-4.5%), and in relation to November 2014 (-12.5%), was recorded in the group of mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and electricity, gas and water supply. In the monthly comparison, just the group Education, health, social services and public administration recorded rose (1.6%). In the year, all groups fell, especially Industry (-12.5%), Services rendered to enterprises (-12.1%) and Construction (-11.9%).

In the classification by employment type categories, the highest drop in the average usual real earnings compared with October 2015 was registered in Workers without a formal record in the private sector (-4.7%) and there were increases of 0.8% among Workers with a formal record in the private sector. In relation to November of 2014, there was decrease in all categories, the greatest one in Workers without a formal record in the private sector (-13.3%).
