The unemployment rate in January was estimated at 5.3%, presenting increase of 1.0 percentage points in the comparison with December and of 0.5 percentage points in relation to January 2014. The unemployed population (1.3 million) increased 22.5% in comparison with the December figure (237 thousand persons more) and 10.7% in relation to January 2014 (125 thousand persons). The employed population (23 million) decreased 0.9% in relation to the December result (minus 220 thousand persons) and remained stable in relation to January 2014. The non-economically-active population was estimated at 19.3 million, remaining stable in relation to December and increasing 2.9% in comparison with January 2014 (551 thousand persons more).

The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.6 million) fell 2.1% in relation to December (minus 253 thousand persons) and 1.9% in comparison with January 2014 (minus 224 thousand persons). The average usual real earnings of the employed population (R$ 2,168.80) was 0.4% above that of December (R$ 2,161.20) and 1.7% bigger than that obtained in January 2014 (R$ 2.133.09). The volume of average usual real earnings (R$ 50.7 billion) in January 2015 recorded decrease of 0.4% in relation to last December and decrease of 2.0% in comparison with that of January last year. The volume of real earnings of the employed population (R$ 62.5 billion in December 2014) increased 11.2% in comparison with November 2014 and 2.5% in comparison with December 2013.

Unemployment rises in four metropolitan areas

By area, the monthly analysis showed increase of the unemployment rate in four of the six metropolitan areas surveyed: in Recife, from 5.5% to 6.7%; in Salvador, from 8.1% to 9.6%, in Belo Horizonte, from 2.9% to 4.1%; in São Paulo, from 4.4% to 5.7%. The rate remained stable in the other areas. In comparison with the results of January 2014, there were changes in the metroplitan areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre (from 8.0% to 9.6%, in the former and from 2.8% to 3.8% in the latter).

In the regional analysis, the number of unemployed persons in comparison with the December figure recorded increases in Belo Horizonte (41.5%), São Paulo (31.6%), Recife (21.7%) and Salvador (20.6%), having remained stable in Rio de Janeiro and in Porto Alegre. In comparison with January 2014, unemployment rose 39.1% in Porto alegre and fell in 28.2% in Salvador. There was no change in the other areas.

Employment population ratio stays at 52.8%

The employment population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at working age) in January 2015 was estimated at 52.8% in the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed, 0.5 percentage points below the result of the previous month. The comparison with January last year shows that this indicator did not record any significant change (from 53.7% to 52.8%). By area, in the monthly comparison, Porto Alegre (-1.1 percentage points) and São Paulo (-0.8 percentage points) recorded decrease in the employment population ratio. In comparison with January 2014, there was also decrease in Belo Horizonte (-1.7 percentage points) and São Paulo (-1.5 percentage points).

In the analysis of the number of employed persons by group of activity for the group of six metropolitan areas, from December 2014 to January 2015, there was stability in all the groups, except Education, health, public administration (-3.2%). In comparison with January 2014, Industry (-6.0%) recorded decline, and Other services, increase (3.6%).

In the monthly comparison, average earnings recorded decrease in Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre

In regional terms, in relation to last December, earnings faced decline in Porto Alegre (2.1%) and in Rio de Janeiro (1.5%) and increase in Salvador (2.9%), Recife (1.5%), Belo Horizonte (1.4%) and São Paulo (1.0%). In comparison with January 2014, earnings recorded positive results in Salvador (14.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.9%), São Paulo (1.5%) and Recife (1.3%). In Belo Horizonte there was decline of 2.2% and in Porto Alegre, no change.

In the classification by groups of activity for the total of six areas, the biggest increase in the average usual real earnings versus figures of December 2014 came from Education, Health, Administration ( 2.2%). Construction (-1.2%) and Other services (-2.4%) recorded decrease. In the annual comparison, only Trade (-1.1) recorded decrease.

In the classification by employment type, the biggest increase in the average usual real earnings was observed among workers without a formal contract in the private sector (4.5%), which, on the other hand, had the biggest decrease in the annual comparison (-4.3%):
