* Seasonally-adjusted series

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the reduced pace of the national industrial output was followed by nine out of the 14 places surveyed between November and December. The most intense declines were registered in Pernambuco (-11.9%), Amazonas (-7.1%) and Santa Catarina (-5.4%). As a result, the first place declined once again after remaining unchanged in October (0.0%) and advancing 3.9% in November; the second posted the seventh consecutive month of declining production and registered a loss of 20.3%; and the last place offset the expansion of 2.8% recorded in November. São Paulo (-2.3%), Pará (-1.8%) and Espírito Santo (-1.7%) also recorded more intense retreats than the national average (-0.7%), whereas Paraná (-0.7%), Goiás (-0.6%) and the Northeast Region (-0.4%) were the other places that reported negative indexes in December 2015. Rio Grande do Sul (1.8%) posted the highest advance in December and stepped up the expansion of 1.0% registered last November. The other positive figures were reported in Bahia (1.4%), Rio de Janeiro (1.3%), Minas Gerais (1.1%) and Ceará (0.6%).

Still in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average of the industry retreated (-1.2%) in the quarter ending in December 2015 and maintained the downward trend started in October 2014. In regional terms, 12 places recorded negative rates. The most intense declines were: Espírito Santo (-6.4%), Amazonas (-5.0%), Paraná (-3.2%), Pernambuco (-2.8%), Pará (-2.2%), São Paulo (-1.6%), Goiás (-1.5%) and Santa Catarina (-1.3%). On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (1.8%) posted the major advance in December 2015.

13 of 15 places drop, compared with December 2014

Having registered negative figures in 13 out of the 15 places surveyed, the industrial sector retreated (-11.9%) in December 2015 in relation to December 2014. The most intense declines were recorded in Amazonas (-30.0%), Espírito Santo (-19.1%) and Paraná (-16.1%), pressed, at a large extent, by the fall in the manufacture of the sectors of beverages (syrup for beverage preparations for industrial use), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (TV sets, audio and video recorders and players - DVD, home theaters and alike, computers, radios for motor vehicles, receptors-decoders of coded video signals, mobile telephones and video displays for computers), other transportation equipment (motorcycles and their pieces) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (naphtha for the petrochemical industry, fuel oil and diesel fuel), in the first place; of mining and quarrying industries (pelletized iron ores), in the second; and of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (cars, tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers and trucks), in the last place.

Ceará (-13.4%) and São Paulo (-12.4%) also registered sharper drops than the national average (-11.9%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-11.5%), Minas Gerais (-10.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-10.2%), Pernambuco (-9.8%), Santa Catarina (-9.8%), Bahia (-6.0%), the Northeast Region (-5.6%) and Goiás (-1.8%) were the other places that dropped in December.  Mato Grosso (18.7%) and Pará (3.7%) advanced, leveraged, at a greater extent, by the positive behavior of food products (fresh and cooled beef, cakes, bagasses, bran and other residues from soybean oil extraction and crude soybean oil) and wood products (sawn, planed and polished wood), in the former place; and of the mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores), in the latter.

The signals of falling production pace were also evident when comparing the indexes of the third and fourth quarters of 2015, both of them comparisons with the same period a year ago. Ten out of the 15 places surveyed lost dynamism, following the movement of the national index (from -9.3% to -11.8%).

In this same type of comparison, Espírito Santo (from 1.5% to -14.3%), Bahia (from -1.5% to -9.5%), Amazonas (from -15.2% to -23.1%), Goiás (from -2.0% to -7.5%), Paraná (from -10.3% to -15.6%), the Northeast Region (from -0.8% to -5.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (from -7.3% to -10.4%) recorded the highest losses, while Ceará (from -12.1% to -10.5%) and Mato Grosso (from 8.2% to 9.0%) reported the major gains between the two periods.

The cumulative index in the year dropped in 12 out of the 15 places surveyed and five of them retreated more than the national average (-8.3%): Amazonas (-16.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-11.8%), São Paulo (-11.0%), Ceará (-9.7%) and Paraná (-9.6%). Santa Catarina (-7.9%), Minas Gerais (-7.9%), Bahia (-7.0%), Rio de Janeiro (-6.5%), Pernambuco (-3.5%), the Northeast Region (-3.0%) and Goiás (-2.5%) were the other places that dropped in the year. In these places, the lower dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the reduced manufacture of capital goods (especially those oriented to transportation equipment - tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, trucks and vehicles for transportation of goods); intermediate goods (car pieces, petroleum products, textiles, steel products, fabricated metal products, basic petrochemicals, thermoplastic resins and pesticides); durable consumer goods (cars, white and brown goods, motorcycles and furniture); and semi and non-durable consumer goods (medicines, textiles, wearing apparel, beverages and food products).

On the other hand, Pará (5.7%), Mato Grosso (4.7%) and Espírito Santo (4.4%) registered the advances in the cumulative index in the year, leveraged, at a greater extent, by the positive behavior coming from the mining and quarrying industries (crude iron ores), in the first place; of food products (cakes, bagasses, bran and other residues from soybean oil extraction, fresh and cooled beef and crude soybean oil), in the second; and of the mining and quarrying industries (pelletized iron ores and crude petroleum oil), in the last place.

In December 2015, the cumulative index in the last 12 months (-8.3%) recorded the most intense loss since November 2009 (-9.4%) and maintained the downward trend started in March 2014 (2.1%). Twelve out of the 15 places dropped and also 12 reported less dynamism against November.
