The IBGE was honored on Monday afternoon (June 1st) with a Solemn Session held by the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Norte in celebration of the Institute's 90th anniversary.

Proposer of the Session, representative Divaneide Basílio (PT) said she felt honored to lead the tribute to an institution that is a national reference. “Any public policy made in Brazil and in the state of Rio Grande do Norte will be based on IBGE data. For an institution that is 90 years old and has such great respectability, the Assembly could not fail to pay this tribute,” stated her.

At the beginning of the ceremony, an institutional video was shown in honor of the IBGE's anniversary. The ceremony was supported by state representative Hermano Morais (MDB), who highlighted the strategic role of the IBGE in the Brazilian state. “It is an institution that has guided all governments, due to its credibility and the dedication of its officials. The IBGE has an important role in building a better, fairer and more egalitarian Brazil,” told Morais.

Representing the House of Representatives, federal representative Fernando Mineiro recalled his relationship with the IBGE and highlighted that the surveys reveal social reality: “The IBGE is the backbone of Brazil's planning. It is impossible to think about public policy without referring to IBGE data. There was a movie playing in my head because I have always used IBGE data in my public life. And the last survey, PeNSE, left me very impacted because it showed the situation of youth. This office plays a very important role in Brazil.”

Following the legislative house's own rite, the IBGE State Superintendency in Rio Grande do Norte, through its Events Committee, was invited to select ten active and retired officials to receive commemorative plaques in recognition of their professional careers.

Among those honored and responsible for speaking on behalf of her colleagues, superintendent Fabiana Fábrega de Oliveira also received a Motion of Applause approved in the plenary for the milestone of being the first woman selected to head the IBGE State Superintendency in Rio Grande do Norte.

“It is a mix of joy, responsibility and humility because, although I have been an Ibgean for almost two decades, I am part of the recent history of the IBGE in Rio Grande do Norte. I have to be responsible to those who came before me, to those who made it possible to have an IBGE in Rio Grande do Norte. The respect and recognition in the spaces where I arrive are due to the work of those who do everything from data collection to supervision, dissemination and support,” told Fábrega, referring to the co-workers who filled the Authorities Gallery to attend the Solemn Session.

Head of the Caicó Branch, the honoree Quintila Santos said she represents the Ibgeans who are on the front line of the Institute. “This is not an individual tribute, but a collective one. I represent everyone who strives to collect the best possible data, to deliver a reliable portrait of the potential and challenges of our regions, in the hope that this becomes public policy and returns as something concrete for society,” commented her.

Representing President Marcio Pochmann, the general coordinator of the IBGE Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), José Daniel Castro da Silva, recalled the Institute's past and spoke about plans for the future.

“The future of the IBGE was born under our management, since 2023, when we started listening to Ibgeans. From these initial guidelines to this day, we have some achievements that were the result of this work: the increase in temporary staffing time, salary recovery, the biggest public tender in the history of the IBGE. For the coming years, the approval of the General Statistical Information Plan will give continuity to the office, in terms of resources, for example, for the 2030 Census, the Census of Agriculture, POF, surveys that were stopped and were resumed. The greatest gift for Brazil is for the IBGE to continue carrying out its surveys, and for the IBGE it is to have a good structure, physical structure of buildings, salary recovery, this is the greatest gift,” told the coordinator.

In addition to parliamentarians, officials and families of those honored, the ceremony was attended by authorities from the State Government of RN, Natal City Hall, Fecomércio and the Brazilian Bar Association - RN Section. Among the IBGE partner institutions in RN, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Incra, Conab, Banco do Nordeste, the Federal Properties Management Office and the State Forum of Federal Managers were represented.

Tributes in other states

In addition to Rio Grande do Norte, the IBGE has already been honored in the Legislative Assemblies of Paraná, Pará and Sergipe.
