The municipality of São Francisco do Conde, in Salvador, Metropolitan Area of the State of Bahia, hosted the workshop “IBGEeduca Digit@l: How to Transform IBGE Data into Education, Public Policies, Management and Citizenship” on February 12.
The event, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), took place in the auditorium of the City Council and was aimed at educators, civil servants, students, and those interested in official data. Its purpose was to familiarize the public with the Institute's information databases, exploring demographic, socioeconomic, and territorial indicators in a didactic and contextualized way to enrich teaching, public management, and citizenship.
The workshop, which had two groups, was led by Márcia Carneiro, a staff member of the Service and Information Division (COATI) of the Institute's Center for Documentation and Information Dissemination (CDDI) and representative of the Casa Brasil IBGE SUDENE in Recife (PE).
During the event, Ms.Carneiro presented the main IBGE platforms, such as IBGEeduca, the Institute's educational portal, which features engaging and up-to-date content suitable for classroom use. The workshop also showcased the tools available on other portals, such as IBGE Cidades, the Map Portal, Casa Brasil IBGE, and IBGE Explica.
“We highlighted the functionalities, such as the possibility to work with millions of municipal data points, interactive maps, pedagogical activities, and digital resources that facilitate the use of information in the classroom, promoting more dynamic and evidence-based learning,” explained the speaker, who added: “This type of event is fundamental to democratizing access to official information and promoting a culture of critical reading of reality and supporting public policies.”
Angélica Paixão, Environmental Education Manager for the municipality of São Francisco do Conde, celebrated the IBGE initiative: “I really enjoyed the workshop and I want to apply this knowledge at school. I'm already proposing to create a specific space where we can work with this tool, allowing students to learn about statistical data in an accessible and interactive way through digital means. I believe this initiative can transform how they see and use information about our country and our territory.”
After the workshops, there was a visit to the Teixeira de Freitas House Museum, a space maintained in honor of Mário Augusto Teixeira de Freitas, one of the main founders of the IBGE, who was born in São Francisco do Conde. The museum, which houses the Institute's agency in the city, was recently revitalized and received a donation of published materials from the IBGE, such as atlases, publications, and maps. Recently, the museum has hosted the presentation of the Institute's Work Plan for 2026.
