IBGE Ecological Reserve celebrates 50 years with commemorative event in December

Reference in the production of environmental information, the IBGE Ecological Reserve, located in the Federal District, celebrates 50 years in December. To celebrate five decades of research and production of scientific knowledge in the area of 1,391 hectares, the institution will carry out a commemorative event on December 10.
Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, emphasized the importance of the Reserve, known as RECOR, along 50 years: "The IBGE Ecological Reserve takes root as one of the major live laboratories of the Cerrado and as a national reference in environmental conservation, long-term ecological research and biodiversity monitoring. By integrating science, preservation and environmental education, it strengthens the IBGE operation in the production of environmental and territorial information, key to Brazilian public policies."
During the celebration, which will be streamed through Digital IBGE, the book "Reserva Ecológica do IBGE - volume 2" will be released, gathering records of researches and experiences related to RECOR. A photograph exhibition will take place in addition to a round table with the authors. On December 9, as part of the celebration, RECOR will host the IBGEeduca team, which will offer education activities aimed at the visit of students.
Mauro Lambert, manager in charge of RECOR, celebrated the protagonism of RECOR along five decades: "the IBGE Ecological Reserve took root as one of the most important sites of ecological research in protected areas in Brazil, integrating the exclusive group of initiatives that combine long-term science, education and conservation with regional, national and international relevance. The celebration of the 50th anniversary is an IBGE tribute to commitment with biodiversity, science and society."
Created in 1975, the IBGE Ecological Reserve is a protected area of scientific interest under the management of the IBGE, reference in the production of information that provides subsidies for the sustainable territorial planning for the Cerrado biome. Far 25 km from Brasília downtown, the area provides a complete infrastructure for researchers, like laboratories, accommodation and restaurant among other facilities, as well as basic information and data on the area through scientific collections, the weather station and georeferenced databases.
