Starting this Wednesday (October 8), the IBGE opens registration for participation in the National Conference of Data Producers and Users, which will be held from December 3 to 5, 2025, at the SENAI Cimatec and SESI facilities, in the city of Salvador (BA).

With the support of the Federation of Industries (FIEB) and the state government of Bahia, the National Conference of Data Producers and Users (CONFEST/CONFEGE) will have as its theme "A proposal for a General Statistical and Geographical Information Plan (PGIEG) for the Development of Brazil in the Digital Era, in the period between 2026 and 2030."

Registration is free and can be done from today (October 8), using a form on the Conference page, on the IBGE Portal (click here). Certificates of participation will be provided.

The main sessions will be streamed through Digital IBGE.

The conference aims to present a proposal for a General Statistical and Geographical Information Plan (PGIEG), provided for by law, that the IBGE has not presented to the country since 1974. And which is fundamental in the strategy and planning of official information.

This resumption is part of a series of transversal actions to reposition the IBGE as a protagonist in the Governance of geosciences and statistics, as well as in the interface with the challenges of the state and the private sector for official historical information in the present and how they can anticipate the future.

For the first time ever, the IBGE's most important conference, organized since 1968, will be held outside Rio de Janeiro, at a time when Brazil and the world undergo a change in the foundations of innovation.

According to the President of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, the proposal is to open space for all knowledge: “We want to open the Conference so that all knowledge can participate and contribute to the planning of Brazilian data, in an integrated and articulated way, because that is what an institution like the IBGE is for.”

The conference will be structured into sessions and working groups that will address topics such as governance and sovereignty, technology and interoperability, and management of production and dissemination flows of information. The idea is to integrate multiple data sources and form a sound basis for predictive public policies.

For the first time in Bahia

This will be the first time that CONFEST/CONFEGE, which was first organized in 1968, will take place outside of Rio de Janeiro.

During the launch press conference, at the beginning of the month, the host of the event, the President of the Federation, Carlos Henrique Passos, highlighted his pride in welcoming the IBGE and other institutions present at the public press conference.

Citing the various transformations that are currently occurring, Passos highlighted the importance of data production for government and private sector decisions.

In the same vein, the President of the Union of Bahia Municipalities (UPB), Wilson Cardoso, praised the work carried out by the IBGE in "producing data that support the decisions taken by municipal managers” and celebrated the holding of CONFEST/CONFEGE in Bahia.

The partnership with the Bahia government was marked, in the presentation press conference, by the participation of two state secretaries: Cláudio Peixoto, from Planning, and Rodrigo Pimentel, from Administration. “Data production is an issue that is in the national agenda because it is a very valuable asset that provides transparency and robustness, not only creating inputs for short, medium and long-term planning, but also for the evaluation of public policies,” highlighted Peixoto.

Pimentel recalled the creation of programs in Bahia using information technology and brought up the importance of integrating data from different sources, such as the IBGE.

In December, CONFEST/CONFEGE will be held at the SENAI/CIMATEC facilities. Present at the Conference's launch event, former Bahia senator Walter Pinheiro, director of Institutional and Governmental Relations at the institution, exemplified the importance of the IBGE data, citing its use in the creation of the 27 Identity Territories into which Bahia was divided, which allowed for a much more effective regionalization of public policies, actions of different levels of government and of the private sector.

André Urpia, superintendent of the IBGE in Bahia stated that it will be an honor for SES-BA to host an event of this magnitude and importance. “We were also happy to realize that so many actors in the state of Bahia were aware of and mobilized by this idea that the IBGE presented.

“It will be a great opportunity to encourage users and researchers to start or continue working, getting involved and engaging in the IBGE surveys and geoscientific production. Perhaps also showing the work they already do, actively contributing to the discussions, adding to and enjoying the event,” said Urpia.

The National Conference of Data Producers and Users (CONFEST/CONFEGE) is the largest national event of statistics and geosciences and one of the most important in the world in this area. The meeting aims at broadening the IBGE´s dialog with society, bringing together producers and users of data and statistics produced by the IBGE, as well as at evaluating the processes of production, dissemination and use of statistical and geographical information, aiming to review and improve the General Statistical and Geographic Information Plan - PGIEG.

Its success depends on the participation of a broad set of actors formed by various producing offices and users of information within the Federal Executive, Legislative and Judiciary Powers, together with state and municipal statistical and geographic information offices, and other segments of organized civil society with interest in the subject.

To perform the activities to fulfill this assignment, the IBGE held the I CONFEST and I CONFEGE in 1968. The second edition of the two Conferences took place simultaneously in 1972. The III CONFEST took place in 1989, but not the CONFEGE. The I National Meeting of Producers and Users of Social, Economic and Territorial Information, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Foundation of the IBGE, made way to the IV CONFEST and III CONFEGE in 1996. As one of the milestones for the celebration of its 70th anniversary, the IBGE promoted the II National Meeting of Producers and Users of Social, Economic and Territorial Information, encompassing the V CONFEST and the IV CONFEGE, which occurred in 2006.

In 2016, the 3rd National Conference of Producers and Users of Statistical, Geographic and Environmental Information (INFOPLAN) was held from December 5 to 9, which, in turn, had as its general objective to structure an inter-institutional agenda and actions that aims to meet current demands and the construction of the National System of Official Information, from the mobilization and participation of producers, and hearing users.

From 2025 onwards, the event was inserted within the IBGE Dialogs 90 Years project, which aims to record the memory of almost nine decades of operation of the institution, as well as proposing guidelines for a new IBGE. It discussed the risks and opportunities of Brazil in the Digital Age; evaluated the processes of production, dissemination and use of statistical and geographic information, through the consolidation of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED), with the participation of data producers and users.
