IBGE organizes first meeting of BRICS´ National Statistical Offices

On Wednesday (5), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) organized the First 2025 Meeting of the heads of the National Statistical Offices that comprise the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia) at the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations in New York, United States of America.

"For the first time in six years, the IBGE organized a meeting of the BRICS´ National Statistical Offices at the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations. It was a very positive and propositional event, including, among others, an initiative to produce Digital Era indicators in the environmental, social and economic dimensions," highlighted Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE.

In addition to Pochmann, the IBGE delegation participated in the meeting, comprising the Deputy Directors of the Directorate of Surveys, Vladimir Gonçalves Miranda, and of the Directorate of Geosciences, Gustavo de Carvalho Cayres da Silva, the Special Advisor Cimar Azeredo Pereira and the IBGE Head of International Relations, Andrea Diniz da Silva, as well as Gustavo Sénéchal, a Minister of the Permanent Mission of Brazil to the UN, who hosted the event.

The meeting approved an agenda related to the initiative of Digital Era indicators and its composition, divided into six dimensions: Digital inclusion and significant connectivity, Digital economy, Digital Government, Skills and Capabilities, Advanced digital technologies and Security. The presentation included the indication of sub-dimensions, as well as a set of indicators designed based on proposals sent by countries (Russia, India, China, United Arab Emirates and Egypt) and in consultations with the IBGE and external experts.

As the President pro tempore of the BRICS´ statistical offices, the IBGE also presented in the meeting proposals like the creation of a secretariat, lasting three years, aiming at maintaining the memory of the group discussions, the creation of three working groups structured into three axes to analyze environmental, social and economic indicators under the scope of the BRICS and the work agenda for 2025.

The meeting with the heads of the BRICS´ NSOs was carried out in the middle of a week of intense activities of the IBGE in New York to participate in the 36th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (read here), and it follows the technical meeting, held in February, aiming at preparing the 2025 edition of the Joint Statistical Publication (read here) for the 17th Summit of the Heads of the BRICS, to be held in Brazil on July 6-7, 2025.
