Inflation preview is 0.62% in November

The inflation preview for November showed an increase of 0.62%, after the 0.54% rate recorded in October. The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), released today (26) by the IBGE, indicates that the largest change and the greatest positive impact came from the Food and beverages group, with 1.34% and 0.29 pp, respectively. In the year, the IPCA-15 has accumulated an increase of 4.35% and, in the last 12 months, the change was 4.77%, above the 4.47% observed in the previous 12 months. In November 2023, the rate had been 0.33%.

Except for Education, whose prices fell 0.01%, eight of the nine groups of products and services surveyed increased in November. The highlight was Food and beverages, responsible for the largest change and the greatest impact on the index. There was an acceleration in the result of this group in relation to October, when it changed by 0.87%. The groups Personal Expenses (0.83% and 0.08 pp) and Transportation (0.82% and 0.17 pp) complete the ranking of the three largest changes this month.

In the Food and beverages group, food at home accelerated from 0.95% to 1.65% in November. The increases in soybean oil (8.38%), tomatoes (8.15%) and meats (7.54%) contributed to the result. Among meats, chuck (10.02%) had the biggest increase. Among the decreases, onions (-11.86%), hen eggs (-1.64%) and fruits (-0.46%) stand out.

Food away decelerated from 0.66% to 0.57% in the same period, due to the less intense increase in meals (from 0.70% in October to 0.38% in November). In turn, the change in snacks increased from 0.76% to 0.78%.

In the Personal Expenses group, the result was mainly influenced by the increase in cigarette prices (4.97%), due to the increase in the specific rate of the Tax on Industrialized Products – IPI on cigarettes, starting on November 1st.

In the Housing group (0.22% and 0.03 pp), residential electricity slowed from 5.29% in October to 0.13% in November, with the yellow tariff flag coming into effect as of November 1st, which added R$1.885 to every 100 kWh consumed. In addition, the following tariff changes were observed:

• 4.97% increase in Goiânia (5.72%), starting on October 22nd;
• 2.98% reduction in Brasília (-1.36%), starting on October 22nd;
• a 2.88% reduction in one of the concessionaires in São Paulo (0.35%), starting on October 23.

In the Transportation group (0.82%), the airfare subitem increased by 22.56% and had the greatest individual impact on the month's index (0.14 pp). The urban bus subitem increased by 1.34%. In fuels (0.03%), there were increases in the prices of vehicle gas (1.06%) and gasoline (0.07%), while ethanol (-0.33%) and diesel fuel (-0.17%) had their prices reduced.

Also in Transportation, in São Paulo (0.73%), reductions of -9.40% were recorded in trains and subways, and -4.44% in public transportation integration. The results of these subitems are due to the free pass granted to passengers in the October municipal elections and on the days of the ENEM exams (November 3 and November 10).

Regarding regional indexes, all eleven areas saw increases in November. The largest change was observed in Recife (0.94%), due to the increase in gasoline prices (6.34%) and airfare (21.12%). The lowest result occurred in Porto Alegre (0.25%), which recorded a drop in residential electricity prices (-1.67%) and gasoline (-1.31%).

More about the survey

To calculate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from October 12 to November 12, 2024 (reference) and compared with those in effect from September 14 to October 11, 2024 (base). The indicator refers to families with incomes between 1 and 40 minimum wages and covers the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador and Curitiba, as well as Brasília and the city of Goiânia. The methodology used is the same as that used for the IPCA, the difference being the period in which prices are collected and the geographic scope. See the full results at Sidra. The next release of the IPCA-15, for December, will be on December 27.
