On Tuesday 9, at the House of Representatives, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) participated in the public audience "The importance and strengthening of the IBGE as the coordinator of the official statistical system," of the Commission of Supervision and Control.  Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, represented the IBGE in the audience, summoned by representatives Jorge Solla and Gilson Daniel, aiming at discussing the importance of the IBGE, as well as the characteristics and format of the institution able to provide in due time the information required by the country.

Pochmann explained to the Commission the IBGE proposal with the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED): "this moment gives us the opportunity to reorganize the Brazilian geo-referenced statistical data system. We understand that it is a crucial point in which Brazil has to recover and establish data sovereignty, putting the IBGE as their major coordinator. This would mean the interoperability of different databases, the pairing and the integration that would allow this commission, for example, to decide on a legislation looking to Brazil in its entirety," said Pochmann.

The President also explained that "the IBGE is the institution that is working harder compared with other institutions in the world. The IBGE will release 318 surveys on a number of subjects this year, from health to economy, from society to environment, from geography to maps. The work of the IBGE personnel answers many complex questions of the society. This institution is reliable and should be strenghtened."

Representative Jorge Solla quoted the IBGE mission, highlighting that it "is the major data provider in Brazil, addressing the requirements of governmental offices and the civil society. All these sectors use data collected and information for actions, either public policies or academic research. The information provided by the IBGE highlights national inequalities under several scopes."

Also a representative, Bohn Gass followed the same line and explained that he "supports the strenghtening of the IBGE structure and the culture of planning, so the importance of this public audience to emphasize the IBGE work and the data it provides.

Mercedes Bustamante, a representative of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC), highlighted that "the IBGE aims at the statistical rigor and it has been key to portray Brazil with all the information required to exercize our citizenship. A society would never be efficient without reliable statistics."

Cleiton Camargo Batista, Director of the National Union of Workers in Federal Public Foundations of Geography and Statistics (ASSIBGE), highlighted that "this audience deals with the importance of having an engaged and consolidated statistical system not only to centralize the data, but to disseminate them as well. The IBGE is the most skilled institution to do this. To coordinate SINGED, the precarious work should be restrained, as well as having sufficient resources to do it."
