Those are some of the data from the Annual Survey of Industry – Enterprise, released today (27) by the IBGE. The institute also released today the Annual Survey of Industry – Product, the results of which you can consult by clicking here.
“The 2022 PIA results are in a context of recovery of Brazilian industry, with the resumption of economic growth and the cooling of inflation”, explains Synthia Santana, Structural Analysis manager at the IBGE.
Brazil ended 2022 with a GDP growth rate of 3.0%, below that recorded in 2021 (4.8%). Ms. Santana recalls that “volatility in the commodities market, present since the beginning of the pandemic, has been recurrent, associated with factors such as fluctuations in the price of iron ore. Uncertainty about the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the crisis in the Chinese real estate market may also have contributed.”
Companies with 500 or more employed persons accounted for 69.1% of net sales revenue in 2022, the highest level in the survey's time series. This is an expansion of 0.8 percentage points in ten years. Compared to 2019, year before the Covid-19 pandemic, there was an increase of 1.6 pp in the participation of this group of companies - the only class of company size to increase its share of revenue in this period.
Manufacture of food products accounted for more than 1/5 of net sales revenue
Manufacture of food products (22.5%) was in the lead in the ranking of industrial activities' participation in net sales revenue, followed by Manufacture of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (12.4%), Manufacture of chemical products (10.8%), Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (7.9%) and Basic metals (6.8%). Of these five activities, four were among the biggest changes in participation from 2013 to 2022. Manufacture of food products stood out, gaining 3.6 pp in this period.
On the other hand, Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies showed the biggest reduction in participation, going from 11.3% in 2013 (2nd place in the ranking) to 7.9% in 2022 (4th place in the ranking). Although it is not among the main activities in terms of net sales revenue, Petroleum and natural gas extraction had one of the biggest changes, increasing its share by 1.8 pp.
Employment in industry grew compared to 2021, but decreased in the last ten years
For the third consecutive year, the number of persons employed in industry increased, an increase of 213.4 thousand persons (2.6%). Even so, this increase did not recover the losses of the last 10 years, accumulating a deficit of 745.5 thousand persons since 2013 (-8.3%). This drop was mainly a consequence of the reduction in jobs in the Manufacturing Industry (-745.9 thousand), where most of the workers in the segment are concentrated.
In 2022, 8.3 million persons worked in the industrial sector, 97.3% (8.1 million) in Manufacturing industries and 2.7% (225.7 thousand) in mining and quarrying industries. From 2021 to 2022, mining and quarrying industries grew by 6.9% in the volume of employed persons, while manufacturing industries expanded by 2.5%.
Five activities accounted for 46.5% of the industry's total workforce in 2022. The highlight was the Manufacturing of food products, which accounted for 22.8% of the persons employed in the industry. Although there was no change in the ranking, the food industry was the only one to increase its participation in the industrial workforce compared to 2013, with an increase of 3.7 pp. In 2022, the sector employed 1.9 million persons, 9.3 % more than in 2013 (161.2 thousand workers). Compared to 2021, this activity employed 62.3 thousand more persons.
The wearing apparel industry occupied the second position, with 7.0%, 1.8 pp below that recorded in 2013. Other activities that employed the most in 2022 were: Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (5.9%) ; Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (5.6%); and Manufacture of non-metallic mineral products (5.2%).
Average wages fell in 19 of 29 industrial activities in the last ten years
Between 2013 and 2022, there was a drop in the average monthly compensation (in minimum wages) in 19 of the 29 industrial activities. During the period, the average salary in industry fell from 3.4 mw to 3.1 mw. In mining and quarrying industries, wages went from 6.3 mw in 2013 to 5.2 mw in 2022. In manufacturing industries, the reduction was 3.3 mw in 2013 to 3.0 mw in 2022.
The most intense salary declines compared to 2013 were observed in Extraction of oil and natural gas (-9.5 mw), Support activities for the extraction of minerals (-4.2 mw) and Manufacture of coke, petroleum-derived products and of biofuels (-2.8 mw). In relation to 2021, the average monthly salary decreased in seven of the 29 activities in 2022. The most significant variations occurred in Extraction of oil and natural gas (-0.9 mw) and Activities supporting the extraction of minerals (-0.6 mw).
In 2022, the Southeast had the highest level of participation in VTI in ten years
In ten years, there was a reduction in the concentration of industrial transformation (VTI) in the North, Northeast and South Regions, which fell by 0.8 pp, 0.1 pp and 1.4 pp, respectively. In the opposite direction, Southeast (1.7 pp) and Central-West (0.7 pp) gained share.
The Southeast's participation in the national industry fluctuated from 2013 to 2022, reaching the lowest level in the survey's time series in 2020, when it reached 56.2% of the VTI. The recovery came in 2021 (58.6%), reaching its highest level in 2022 (61.1%), largely influenced by the increase in São Paulo's share, which went from 30.4% in 2020 to 34. 8% in 2022.
Even keeping its second place in the ranking, the South stood out for its decreased participation in the post-pandemic period, falling from 19.1% in 2019 to 18.1% in 2022. Next comes the Northeast (9.1%), Central-West (6.0%) and North (5.8%).
As for the Federation Units, the five main contributions to Brazilian industry in 2022 came from São Paulo (34.8%), Rio de Janeiro (12.8%), Minas Gerais (11.1%), Paraná (6. 8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (6.4%). The first three were responsible for 58.7% of production. In terms of activities, Manufacture of food products stood out in 13 of the 27 Federation Units.
More about the survey
The Annual Survey of Industry - Enterprise (PIA-Enterprise) aims at identifing the basic structural characteristics of the business segment of industrial activity in the country and its transformations over time, covering, among other aspects, data on employed personnel, salaries, costs and expenses, revenues, production value and industrial transformation. Its results are a reference for the analysis of the activities that make up this segment and support the macroeconomic estimates of the System of National Accounts - SCN.
There are data by company and by Major Regions and Federation Units, as well as results referring to companies with 30 or more employed persons and/or that earned gross revenue from sales of industrial products and services exceeding R$ 23.1 million in the year prior to the survey reference.
