The inflation preview of June stood at 0.39%, after a rate of 0.44% in May. The Extended National Consumer Price 15 (IPCA-15), released today (26) by the IBGE, shows that the biggest change (0.98%) and the main impact (0.21 percentage points) came from Food and beverages, followed by Housing (0.63% and 0.10 p.p.) and Health and personal care (0.57% and 0.08 p.p.).

IPCA-E, which is cumulative IPCA-15 in the quarter, stood at 1.04%, below the rate of 1.12% of the same period a year ago. In the last 12 months, the IPCA 15 changed by 4.06%, above the 3.70% registered in the 12 previous months. In June 2023, the rate was 0.44%.

Among the nine groups of products and services surveyed, seven recorded increases in June. Transportation (-0.23%) and Household articles (-0.01%) were the only ones recording negative changes.

In Food and beverages (0.98%), food at home accelerated from 0.22% in May to 1.13% in June. This result was mainly due to increases in potato (24.18%), long life milk (8.84%), rice (4.20%) and tomato (6.32%). With drops, pinto beans (-4.69%), onion (-2.52%) and fruits (-2.28%) stand out.

Food away from home (0.59%) accelerated from May (0.37%), due to the rise of snacks (from 0.47in May to 0.80% in June) and meal (0.34% in May versus 0.51% in June).

In Housing (0.63%), the rise of water and sewage fares (2.29%) was influenced by price adjustments of 6.94% in São Paulo (5.48%), since May 10, of 9.85% in Brasília (4.60%), since June 1st and of 2.95% in Curitiba (2.86%), starting on May 17. As for residential electricity (0.79%), the following adjustments were observed: in Salvador (0.52%), with 1.63%, since April 22; in Recife (-0.64%), with -2.64%, since April 29; in Fortaleza (1.14%), with -2.92% since April 22; and in Belo Horizonte (4.11%), with 6.76% since May 28.

Also as for Housing, in the subitem piped gas (-0.10%), the result for Rio de Janeiro (-0.33%) comes from the average decrease of 1.75%, observed since June 1, after the price adjustment of 0.97% went into effect on May 1.

The result of Health and personal care (0.57%) was influenced by the rise of prices of health insurance (0.37%), resulting from the price adjustment of up to 6.91% authorized by ANS on June 4, in effect since May and whose cycle ends in April 2025. Therefore, the IPCA 15 of June shows monthly shares relative to the months of May and June.

In Transportation (-0.23% and -0.05 p.p), there were drops in airfares (-9.87% and -0.07 p.p.). More about the survey

To calculate the IPCA-15, the methodology is the same as the one used for the IPCA; the difference lies in the period of price collection and in the geographic coverage.  In order to estimate the IPCA-15, prices were collected from May 16 to June 14, 2024 (reference) and compared with those in effect from April 16 to May 15, 2024 (base).

The indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, besides Brasília and the municipality of Goiânia. Please take a look at the complete results on Sidra. The next release of the IPCA-15, relative to July, will be on July 28.
