The IBGE released on Tuesday, May 7, the 2022 Municipal Maps Collection, with mapping results for the 5.568 municipalities in Brazil, the Federal District and the State District of Fernando de Noronha, with information updated for up to July 31, 2022, and produced according to the Digital Municipal Mesh. The Collection is available here

With the objective of supporting the operations of collection, processing, analysis and tabulation of statistical and geographic information associated to Censuses, the Household Surveys and the Annual Population estimates present the political and administrative Division of the country, the delimitation of special areas, such as Indigenous lands, quilombola territories, settlement projects and conservation units, besides the delimitation of urban areas, information about the road system and the hydrography of Major Regions.

Diogo Nunes da Silva, manager for Data and Services Infrastructure of the Territorial Structures Coordination, highlights the main aspects of the product. “Municipal Maps encompass an overview of the entire country, focusing in functional and simplified communication, encompassing the following levels of information: political-administrative Division, considering international frontiers, state and municipal boundaries and intra-municipal division (Districts and Subdistricts); delimitation of Special Areas: official indigenous lands, official quilombola areas, settlements and conservation units, delimitation of urban city areas, villages and urban centers; main rural localities; local points of reference; information on the road system and Hydrography.”

José Henrique da Silva, Manager for Brazilian Territorial Division of the Territorial Structure coordination, explains the importance of updating maps for public agents. “Maps in GeoPDF format are important because they materialize as maps the territory boundaries presented by the IBGE in its surveys, in an accessible, simple and practical way when compared to vector formats made available by the Digital Municipal Mesh, which require specific software to be visualized. For this reason, the main users of this product outside the IBGE are municipal public agents, teaching establishments and society in general.

These maps were generated as Python files from an application developed by the IBGE, to combine geoservices of vector data from the IBGE databases and the best input available, and, also, data from census operations with stored data (2007, 2010, 2017 and 2022), data from various IBGE cartographic bases, free geoservices and results of updated field works, conducted by the IBGE branches.
