Big Data Regional Hub conducts webinar on experiment with COVID data

The UN Regional Hub for Big Data is conducting a series of three seminar presenting experiences with the use of alternative sources of data to produce reliable indicators. The next session be held on April 19, at 1 pm, about an experiment that attempted to account for bias in the estimation of COVID 19 cases in the Brazilian population using information from administrative records of tests published by the Ministry of Health. João Gabriel Malaguti Sobrinho, a PhD student at ENCE, will deliver the lecture.

The first webinar was held on March 15 and is available at the Hub web page. SpeakerThiago de Oliveira Meireles, a doctoral student at USP, spoke about weighting of a non-probabilistic sample to estimate internet quality indicators for Brazilian schools. The third and last seminar will take place on May 17. Luciene Maria Torquato Cerqueira Batista, a doctoral student at UFPE, will detail the experiment that used algorithms of data scraping to produce price inference and sampling of the virtual trade of mobile telephones.
ENCE coordinates UN Regional Hub for Big Data in Brazil
The result of a partnership between the IBGE and the UN Statistics Division, the UN Big Data Regional Hub in Brazil was launched in November 2021 in the 11th Statistical Conference for the Americas, carried out by the (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Hub is based at the National School of Statistical Sciences (ENCE), an academic area of the IBGE, which coordinates efforts and contributions from different fields of the Institute to support activities within the Regional Hub.
The project focuses on the advance in the use of big data use to improve the production of official statistics, so as to promote the sharing of knowledge and of innovative initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Other hubs besides Brazil are United Arab Emirates, Rwanda, Indonesia and China.
