IBGE releases publication on 2030 Agenda and G20 and Geographic School Atlas in an event at the G20 House in Rio de Janeiro

The IBGE released the publication “Creating Synergies between the 2030 Agenda and G20 - Inequalities booklet with first analyses, last Tuesday, April 9, at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim, the G20 House, in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro. This publication presents a group of (Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2030 Agenda, with data that illustrate inequalities in gender, color or race, age, disability status and differences between Brazilian Major Regions. The publication also shows selected indicators for G20 countries, including Brazil.

In the event, the IBGE also launched the 9th edition of the Geographic School Atlas, traditionally produced by the Institute, and which is a reference for the school audience, and released a world map that places Brazil in the center of the projection. On the same occasion, Marcio Pochmann, president of the IBGE, signed a protocol of intentions with the state government of Rio de Janeiro, represented by the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, for use of the G20 House. The event was held in partnership with the Secretariat for Economy and Creative economy, the Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability, the State Institute for the Environment, agencies in the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, besides G20 Brazil and Rio 2030 and promoted by the Authority in Sustainable Development in the State of Rio de Janeiro, and broadcast by the IBGE Website and the other media channels of the Institute.

The musical attraction Meu Kantinho, a group from Penha Circular, a neighborhood located in the northeast are of the capita, Rio de Janeiro, opened the event. The trio formed by Toninho de Souza (guitar), William Emanuel (flute) and Siqueira (ukulele) played the national anthem for the audience at the place and those watching the event online from other locations.

Denise Kronemberger, IBGE manager for Institutional relations and coordinator of the SDG Project within the presidency of the Institute, spoke about the publications being released and summarized the content of “Creating Synergies between the 2030 Agenda and G20 - Inequalities booklet with first analyses”, highlighting information such as the rate of completion of high school, proportion of women seats in national parliaments and unemployment rate by age in G20 countries.

“The indicators follow international standards and methodologies and are calculated according to regularly produced official data. With this publication, the IBGE raises for discussion the synergies between the 20230 Agenda and the G20, by providing a first set of data that will be useful in discussions about inequalities, to be held within work groups, as well as in G20 Social and in the Summit, scheduled for November.”

Following Ms. Kronemberger’s talk, the deputy-director of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), Maria do Carmo Bueno, spoke about the tools and innovations of the 9th edition of the Geographic School Atlas. “We have adopted a socioeconomic perspective of the world and of Brazil. The Atlas has a number of indicators and texts on cartography, remote sensing, flags of countries and states, all that can help students, and, besides the printed version, there is a digital one that can be updated more easily,” she remarked.

Paulo Protassio, Director of the Authority in Sustainable Development in the State of Rio de Janeiro, on behalf of the State Government, highlighted the importance of having a projection that places Brazil in the center of the world map. “We are used to eurocentrism and being Eurocentric is not being Brazilian. With this new version of the map, we take a new position and a new idea. A Brazilian who comes into a classroom today can see Brazil in the center of planet Earth and having this perception can change our behavior. Brazil has come to the center of the world.”

The secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Daniela Barros, explained that “G20 is now in Rio de Janeiro and we have decided to make this concrete here at Casa Laura Alvim, currently, G20 House, and pay homage to a woman who honored many artists throughout her life. This house is open for initiatives as this one, to promote meetings that can produce information, generate knowledge and transformation.”

The national secretariat for Social Participation of the Presidency of the Republic, Renato Simões, detailed the importance of the role played by the IBGE in our society. “G20 Social is the convergence of all forms of social participation in the G20 process, established by the Federal Government from every public policy and reaching international events of multilateral agencies Brazil I now part of. Having this database available brings light to society through our work. The IBGE is a meeting point for cumulative knowledge and all that there is yet to be built.”

According to the president of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, all the releases in this event are “of fundamental importance for the construction of knowledge nationwide, being high-quality informative material, because we need Brazilians that are more and more connected with the reality of our country, a place of continental dimensions, and informed about geoprocessing, a huge set of instruments that allow us to better analyze the reality of people in Brazil.” Mr. Pochmann remarked that the partnership with the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, encompassing activities of the Institute at the G20 House, becomes concrete though the signature of the Protocol of Intentions, which “gives us the opportunity to experience the G20 reality from the perspective of Brazilian municipalities. We can take this initiative from Rio de Janeiro to other states in Brazil, and to municipalities, mainly, in order to provide them with better information that can support better public policies.”

At the end of the event, Meu Kantinho played two chorinhos “No meu tempo” and “Vou viver” for the delight of the audience attending the event at the G20 house and on the YouTube channel from other locations.

Students from Professor Antônio Maria Teixeira Filho State School, Ignácio Azevedo do Amaral State School, Jorge de Gouveia Municipal School and República do Líbano Municipal School, representing public schools in Rio de Janeiro, received the very first copies of the 9th edition of the Geographic School Atlas.

Márcia Mathias, a retired IBGE civil servant, was the mediator between the schools and the IBGE. “I am honored to have the IBGE and education together, because I have retired from the Institute and currently work at Josué de Castro State School as a teaching coordinator. I can say I represent both sides here today.”

High school students Sara, Letícia and Diogo, from CIEP 117 Carlos Drummond de Andrade, located in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, state of Rio de Janeiro, attended the event as members of the “Young Journalists” program, promoted by the State of Rio de Janeiro, and were responsible for media coverage for the newspaper Intercultural News, a bilingual publication of their school. The newspaper helps increase students’ knowledge, keeps them informed about academic opportunities and News in general, as a way to encourage other students to use education as a tool to change their lives. “We cover many events in our school and write about important topics, such as the G20. It is one of the main newspapers produced by students in a public school, ” said Sara, editor in chief.
