Q3 2023 records growth in the slaughter of cattle, chickens and hogs and pigs

Cattle slaughter rose 11.1% and chicken slaughter rose 3.1% in the 3rd quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year, according to the preliminary results of the Livestock Production Statistics, released today (9) by the IBGE. The slaughter of pigs and hogs rose 0.5%. In relation to the 2nd quarter of this year, cattle slaughter grew 5.8%, while chicken slaughter and that of hogs and pigs increased 1.4% and 3.7%, respectively.

The complete results and data for Federation Units will be released on December 7th.

The first results show that the total number of cattle head slaughtered in the 3rd quarter of this year was 8.85 million. Chicken slaughter recorded 1.58 billion head and the slaughter of hogs and pigs, 14.60 million.

Of the total number of cattle slaughtered, the preliminary result indicates a production of 2.36 million tonnes of carcasses, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period in 2022 and 8.6% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023. Regarding hogs and pigs, the cumulative carcass weight reached 1.37 million tonnes, growth of 2.4% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022 and an increase of 3.9% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023.

The cumulative weight of chicken carcasses was 3.31 million tonnes in the 3rd quarter of this year, an increase of 3.4% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022 and a drop of 1.3% compared to the previous quarter.

The acquisition of raw milk made by establishments operating under municipal, state or federal health inspection was 6.20 billion liters. There were increases of 0.8% compared to the same period last year and 8.4% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023.

Hen egg production reached 1.06 billion dozen in the 3rd quarter of 2023. The result corresponds to increases of 1.9% compared to the same period of the previous year and 1.0% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023.

The survey also showed that tanneries that tan at least five thousand whole units of raw bovine hide per year reported having received 8.63 million whole pieces of raw hide in the 3rd quarter of 2023. This quantity represents an increase of 6 .6% compared to that recorded in the 3rd quarter of 2022 and an increase of 3.0% compared to the previous quarter.
