Rio de Janeiro Mayor hosts President of IBGE

Eduardo Paes (PSD) talked with the IBGE about technical partnerships to reflect on the present and future of Rio

Last Tuesday (January 14), Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) hosted Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, at his office in the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, to talk about new partnerships for 2025 and coming years.

Escorted by Felipe Santa Cruz, Secretary of Administration, who intermediated the meeting, Paes opened the conversation contextualizing the challenges of the municipal management and how the City Hall might work with the IBGE to face the challenges of the changes in the metropolises and the impact on the management of public policies and on the life of citizens.

By making an overview of the last censuses, the President of the IBGE pointed out the need to understand the phenomenon of the "de-metropolization", in which coastal cities lose economic dynamism and face challenges in public health, lack of transportation and housing.

Paes highlighted the fact that the city administration has taken on part of the management of the public transportation, as the BRT case of success, emphasizing that solutions also require the municipal administration to rethink about its role as administrator and developer of the public policy itself.

For the President of the IBGE, the Digital Era provides a new opportunity for states and, especially, for municipalities to review their own planning.

In a practical way, the IBGE and the City Hall will develop a technical dialog on how it is possible to reflect on a city like Rio, with an innovative planning for the short, medium and long terms. With actions in education, innovation and training, especially for the formation of youngsters. Denis Maracci Gimenez, Advisor of the Presidency, participated in the meeting and he oversees the deals between the City Hall and the IBGE.

IBGE´s Vice-President and Executive Director, Flávia Vinhaes, was also present and dealt with administrative partnerships, especially for the new building in Horto and refurbishing of the buildings located downtown.

And the Coordinator General of the Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination (CDDI), which includes the IBGE´s Coordination of Social Communication (CCS), presented dissemination initiatives, highlighted by Casa Brasil IBGE, whose experience can be reproduced, by means of technology, in municipal schools and libraries.

The President of the IBGE provided the Mayor and the Secretary with a kit of publications, including the world map of Brazil in the center of the world. Paes provided the IBGE delegation with a publication that brings together the past and the present of Rio through illustrations.
