The national harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds is expected to reach a record of 261.4 million tonnes in 2022, according to the June estimate of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), released today (7) by the IBGE, This value is 3.2% higher (or 8.2 million tonnes) than the harvest obtained in 2021 (253.2 million) and 0.6% lower than the May´s estimate (1.5 million).

The survey also unveils that the area to be harvested is 72.5 million hectares, a rise of 5.8% against the result of 2021 (or 4 million hectares). Compared with the May´s forecast, it is a growth of nearly 209.4 thousand hectares (or 0.3%).

Rice, corn and soybeans are the three major products of the survey. Altogether, they represent 91.7% of the production estimate and account for 87.5% of the area to be harvested.

The output of rice was estimated at 10.7 million tonnes, a drop of 2.2% in the area and a decrease of 8.1% in the production of paddy rice.

As the major commodity in Brazil, soybeans registered a drop of 0.5% compared with the forecast last month. “It was a harvest marked by adverse climate effects, with a strong drought during the development of the crop in the states of the center-south of Brazil,” explains Carlos Barradas, manager of the survey. Yet, the national output should hit 118.0 million tonnes, a reduction of 12.6% compared with 2021.

The production estimate for corn was 111.2 million tonnes. Despite the drop of 0.8% in relation to the May´s forecast, that figure represents a growth of 26.7% when compared with 2021, or more 23.4 million tonnes. “After a significant drop in the production in 2021, caused by a late planting and lack of rainfall in the major producing places, a regular year is expected, especially during the second crop, which is the major one and should account for 76.8% of the Brazilian output,” argues Barradas. As a result, the national production of corn should be a record in 2022.

One of the major winter cereals in Brazil, wheat has an estimated output of 8.9 million tonnes, a drop of 0.2% over the previous month, though an increase of 13.4% in relation to 2021. The average yield should reach 3,139 kg/ha, a growth of 11.6%. According to Barradas, the rise in the production of wheat is related to the prices of the product, which are high due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, two major producers and exporters of the cereal, which face problems due to the war. “As a result, the national output increased, with the South Region accounting for 89.8% of the wheat production in Brazil in 2022,” explains him.

Four regions rise the production estimates

In June, the production estimate of cereals, legumes and oilseeds rose compared with 2021 in four regions: Central-West (10.7%), North (5.5%), Southeast (13.3%) and Northeast (11%). Only the South dropped, by 14%.

Concerning the Federation Units, the highlights on the high side over May were Tocantins (35.9 thousand tonnes), Rondônia (25 thousand tonnes), Acre (10.5 thousand tonnes) and Ceará (9.5 thousand tonnes). On the other hand, the major drops occurred in Paraná (-587.4 thousand tonnes), Goiás (-420.1 thousand tonnes), Minas Gerais (-287.2 thousand tonnes) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-266.5 thousand tonnes).

Mato Grosso leads the national production of grains with a share of 30.3%, followed by Paraná (13.8%), Goiás (10.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (8.2%) and Minas Gerais (6.7%). These states together accounted for 79.0% of the national forecast.

About the LSPA

Launched in November 1972 aiming at addressing the demand of users for monthly short-term statistical information, the LSPA provides estimates of planted area, harvested area, amount produced and average yield of products selected based on criteria of economic and social importance for Brazil. It does not only monitor each crop investigated in the calendar year of reference, from the intention to plant up to the end of the harvest, but also presents the forecast for the coming year, with surveys in the months of October, November and December.
