In June, the production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds estimated for 2022 should add up to a record of 261.4 million tonnes, 3.2% above (8.2 million tonnes) that obtained in 2021 (253.2 million tonnes) and 0.6% below the previous information (less 1.5 million tonnes).

JUNE estimate for 2022 261.4 million tonnes
JUNE 2022 / MAY 2022 change (-0.6%) -1.5 million tonnes
2022 harvest / 2021 harvest change (3.2%) 8.2 million tonnes

The Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA) also unveiled that the area to be harvested was 72.5 million hectares  (4.0 million hectares) 5.8% larger than the area harvested in 2021 and 0.3% larger (209.3 thousand hectares) that that expected in May.

Rice, corn and soybeans were the three major products in this group, which, altogether, represented 91.7% of the production estimate and accounted for 87.5% of the area to be harvested. The area for corn production increased by 9.3% (7.5% in the first crop and 9.9% in the second one). The national production of corn is expected to reach a new record in 2022.

The output of upland cotton increased 18.0%, that of soybeans, 4.4% and that of wheat, 1.6%. On the other hand, the area for rice decreased 2.2%.

Concerning the production forecast, upland cottonseed rose 15.0%, wheat, 13.4% and corn, 26.7%, being 0.5% for corn - 1st crop and 37.4%The remainder is temporarily in Portuguese for corn - 2nd crop. Soybeans decreased 12.6% and paddy rice, 8.1%.

The June information for the national harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds of 2022 reached 261.4 million tonne, 3.2% higher than that obtained in 2021 (253.2 million tonnes), a growth of 8.2 million tonnes. It declined 1.5 million tonnes (-0.6%) in relation to the previous month.  A area to be harvested was of 72.5 million hectares, representing a growth of 5.8% against the area harvested in 2021, an increase of 4.0 million hectares. The area to be harvested rose 209,352 hectares (0.3%) in relation to the previous month.

The estimated production of cereals, legumes and oilseeds registered a positive annual change in four Major Regions: Central-West (10.7%), North (5.5%), Southeast (13.3%) and Northeast (11.0%), whereas it negatively changed in the South (-14.0%).

Among the Federation Units, Mato Grosso led as the major producer of grains, with a share of 30.3%, followed by Paraná (13.8%), Goiás (10.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (9.4%), Mato Grosso do Sul (8.2%) and Minas Gerais (6.7%), which, together, accounted for 79.0% of the national overall. The major rises in the estimated output over May occurred in Tocantins (35 950 t), Rondônia (25 003 t), Acre (10 561 t), Ceará (9 529 t), Rio Grande do Norte (923 t), Espírito Santo (174 t) and Maranhão (12 t).

The majors drops were in Paraná (-587 400 t), Goiás (-420 172 t), Minas Gerais (-287 217 t), Mato Grosso do Sul (-266 563 t),  Pará (-34 438 t), Bahia (-7 283 t) and Rio de Janeiro (-598 t).

Highlights in the June 2022 estimate in relation to the previous month

In relation to the previous month, the estimated production of sorghum (1.8% or 51 392 t), barley (1.6% or 7 700 t), tomatoes (0.9% or 30 870 t), beans - 1st crop (0.5% or 5 338 t), corn - 1st crop (0.3% or 84 178 t), oat (0.2% or 1 873 t) increased, whereas that of beans - 3rd crop (-7.8% or -54 281 t), beans - 2nd crop (-4.3% or -58 084 t), corn - 2nd crop (-1.1% or -932 554 t), soybeans (-0.5% or -650 754 t) and wheat (-0.2% or -16 150 t) declined.

WINTER CEREALS (grain) - The major winter cereals produced in Brazil are wheat, white oat and barley. The estimated production of wheat was 8.9 million tonnes, a decline of 0.2% against the previous month and an increase of 13.4% in relation to 2021, and the average yield is expected to reach 3 139 kg/ha, an increase of 11.6%.

The output estimate of oat was 1.1 million tonnes, an increase of 0.2% against the previous month and of 8.3% against 2021.

As for barley, the estimated output (483.2 thousand tonnes) increased by 1.6% in relation to the previous month and by 10.6% in relation to 2021.

BEAN SEED - The estimated output of beans, considering the three crops was of 3.1 million tonnes.  This estimate was 3.4% lower than that in the previous month. In this review, the Federation Units with the biggest participation in the production estimate were Paraná (24.4%), Minas Gerais (15.3%), Goiás (10.4%) and Mato Grosso (8.8%). In relation to the annual change, the estimate for the area to be harvested increased 1.5%, with an increase of 9.6% in average yield.  The production estimate increased 11.2%. This output volume should address the domestic market.

The 1st crop was estimated at 1.1 million tonnes with an increase of 0.5% against the May estimate, due to the increase of 0.6% in the average yield.

The second crop of beans was estimated at 1.3 million tonnes, a retreat of 4.3% against the May estimate, also with a decrease of 4.8% in the estimated average yield. The second crop represented 42.1% of the total amount of beans produced in Brazil.

Concerning the third crop of beans, the production estimate was 647.3 thousand tonnes, a decline of 7.7% over the May estimate, with the area to be harvested declining 7.5%, as well as the average yield, which dropped 0.3%.

CORN (grain) - The production estimate of corn hit 111.2 million tonnes, representing a decline of 0.8% against the previous month and of 26.7% in relation to 2021 or more 23.4 million tonnes. After a significant drop in the production in 2021, caused by a late planting and lack of rainfall in the major producing Federation Units, a regular year was expected, especially during the second crop, which is the major one and should account for 76.8% of the Brazilian output. The national production of corn was expected to reach a new record in 2022.

The production estimate for the first crop was 25.8 million tonnes, representing an increase of 0.3% from the previous month. It grew 0.5% in relation to the 2021 harvest, despite the increase of 7.5% in the area to be harvested. The average yield reduced 6.5% due to the lack of rainfall, especially in the Brazilian South Region.

For corn - 2nd crop, the estimated output hit 85.4 million tonnes, a decline of 1.1% in relation to the previous month and an increase of 37.4% in relation to the 2021, with a growth of 8.0% in the planted area and of 9.9% in the area to be harvested. The average yield recorded an increase of 25.1%.  The Brazilian output of corn - 2nd crop was a record in the IBGE´s time series, resulting from an increase in the investments in the crop, motivated by excellent prices and by the climate, which has benefited the crops in most producing Federation Units up to now.

In most Federation Units important in the production of that cereal, the weather jeopardized the development of the crops in the second crop of 2021. In addition to the harsh weather, the agricultural year was delayed, shortening the “planting window”, which further helped reduce production, since it left the crops more exposed to rainfall restrictions during the production cycle.  Therefore, the high growth in the production of corn - 2nd crop in 2022 was also due to the low comparison basis of the output last year.

SOYBEAN GRAIN - The national production estimated of soybeans registered a monthly decline of 0.5%. In a harvest marked by adverse climate effects, with a strong drought during the development of the crop in the states of the center-south of Brazil, the national production should hit 118.0 million tonnes, which represented a retraction of 12.6% compared with that obtained in the previous year.

SORGHUM GRAIN - The estimated production was of 2.9 million tonnes in June, a rise of 1.8% over the previous month. The estimate of the area to be harvested grew 4.1%, whereas the average yield reduced 2.2% in this comparison.

TOMATOES - The estimated output of tomatoes in 2022 was of 3.6 million tonnes, pointing out to an increase of 0.9% in relation to May. The planted area grew 0.5% and the average yield, 0.4%.
