The Annual Survey of Industry - Enterprise, PIA Enterprise, aims at identifying the basic structural characteristics of the industrial activity in Brazil and its changes over time. It includes, among other aspects, data on employed personnel, salaries, costs and expenses, revenues, production value and value added. Its results are a reference to the analysis of the activities that comprise this segment and give support to the macroeconomic estimates of the System of National Accounts -SNA.
This fact sheet presents analytical comments on the main results of the 2021 PIA-Enterprise from two points of view. The first one presents a characterization of the enterprises with one or more employed persons based on variables related to gross revenue and net sales revenue, employment (employed persons) and industrial concentration (participation in the value of manufacturing output). The second focus is on the industrial producing branches of enterprises with 5 or more employed persons, in which the sectorial and regional compositions of the Brazilian industry from the production point of view are highlighted, in terms of value added, considering, mainly, the results of federation Units. In both cases, the results were compared with those observed in 2012 to illustrate the structural changes that occurred in extremes of a 10-year series and also with other moments of the time series since 2007.
The PIA-Enterprise fact sheets are also available in print. The technical notes are released separately and can only be accessed digitally on this page. They provide information about objectives, scope, classification of activities, concepts and definitions adopted, sampling plan, among other methodological considerations on the survey.
The IBGE web portal also presents the complete table plan of PIA-Enterprise, by enterprise and by Major Regions and Federation Units, as well as the results of enterprises with 30 and more employed persons and/or with gross revenue from sales of industrial services and products above R$23.1 million in the year before that of the survey reference. The information for the 1996-2007 considers the structure set by CNAE 1.0 and, from 2007 on, by CNAE 2.0.
This set of information constitutes the most complete source of statistics on the subject, providing elements for public and private planning, for the academic community and for society in general. In the post-pandemic scenario, the access to this statistics is an important tool to explain potential structural changes in the business segment of Brazil, in terms of economic relevance of sectors and regions, labor market, production behavior, value generation capacity, among other aspects.
